Lydia Hol’s music leaves you with the taste of the sea on your lips, and the wind in your hair. Her time spent living in Ireland flavors her performances with a storyteller’s honesty and charm. Since the release of her debut EP, Boats, in 2012, Lydia Hol has toured the country from coast to coast, filling rooms with her songs and witty stories. She’s shared the stage with folk legends such as Dar Williams and Sylvia Tyson, and become a favorite on the CBC. Her new full length record Heading North recorded with Frazey Ford's producer John Raham, captures a delicate, elegant take on folk.
Even the title, India/Seattle feels like a story on it’s own. Victoria’s Mike Edel couldn’t have named his sophomore release more poetically.
Part of growing a little bit older, a little bit wiser is the awareness that comes inside growing spaces. Nearing thirty, on the exhaust of a brutal four year touring schedule, Edel settled inside these spaces to create his finest work yet. There’s a quiet here, even in the literal spaces in the record that speak loudly.
There’s something about the way Edel presents personal experiences in a way that project universal understandings. Love and beauty, pain and confusion, the knowledge that all precious things are only precious because they can be lost. It feels a little bit like growing up - like the moment when everything that felt so close as a young person is all of a sudden so far away. It’s the comfort in finding that you aren’t alone. There’s a humanity in these discoveries, and listening to India/Seattle feels like watching Edel discover it for himself, and the product is a little bit of each of us.
The Fretless is a new approach to folk music that is quickly gaining high acclaim around the world. This unique band is taking string music to fascinating places as it transforms fiddle tunes and folk melodies into intricate, beautiful, high-energy arrangements.
In November 2011, Karrnnel Sawitsky (Fiddle), Ivonne Hernandez (Fiddle), Eric Wright (Cello) and Trent Freeman (Fiddle) got together for the first time on Vancouver Island to start rehearsing this project. After 10 days straight of writing, arranging, and practicing, The Fretless emerged as a band.
With the release of their debut album ‘Waterbound’ in early 2012, and their latest release ‘The Fretless’ in 2014, the quartet has grabbed the attention of critics and fans across many genres. These albums have fueled a busy touring schedule of festivals and concert halls across North America and Europe and world wide sales and radio play. They have also won 3 Canadian Folk Music Awards, and 2 Western Canadian Music Awards for the albums.
Musically, the goals of the group are to expand the rhythmic, harmonic and structured arrangement style of the many folk genres they play using only string instruments. As a band, all four members have come from very different traditional and contemporary backgrounds, and are influenced by a vast array of art. However they are unified in their goal to continually develop their amalgamated sound in order to push traditional music as far as possible.

This unique band is taking string music to fascinating places as it transforms fiddle tunes and folk melodies into intricate, beautiful, high-energy arrangements. They harbor all the energy of fiddle tunes, while shattering all expectations in writing, creativity and performance. The Fretless is an innovation in music that must be heard.
