B.C. rock critic Tom Harrison was a champion of the West Coast music scene
Mr. Harrison, who has died at 70, was Vancouver’s pre-eminent music journalist in a city with many good ones. Over more than four decades, he reviewed thousands of singles, albums and concerts by rock superstars, one-hit wonders and up-and-comers who never quite made it. He chronicled the emergence of punk rock in the late 1970s, serving as a bridge between ragtag musicians and the music industry, while each eyed the other with suspicion. An astute critic, Mr. Harrison’s approach was to find a nugget of encouragement for bands with flawed execution but admirable intent. – READ MORE

‘Artists won’t stop fighting until large broadcast corporations pay fairly for music.’
In late December, a united recording industry pushed hard to advance the American Music Fairness Act (AMFA), a bill to finally pay artists for AM/FM radio plays in the U.S. Broadcast corporations may comfort themselves that Congress, in the end, didn’t act on AMFA. But let’s make one thing clear: the fact that Congress came so close to passing the legislation is a harbinger that the era when multi-million-dollar corporations like iHeart, Audacy, Cumulus, and others can deny economic justice to creators is ending. – READ MORE

YouTube will start sharing ad money with Shorts creators on February 1st
The change is coming as part of a broader update to YouTube’s Partner Program, which will require everyone who’s currently part of it to sign new agreement terms, whether or not they’re looking to make money from Shorts. Creators won’t necessarily have to opt in to shorts monetization if they don’t want to. YouTube says it’s introducing a modular system for the partner program’s terms — everyone in the program will have to sign a base agreement that dictates things like what you can post on the site and how payment works. – READ MORE

National Independent Venue Association Partners With r.Cup to Reduce Garbage at Concerts
Anyone who’s been to a concert in the past couple of decades knows the sound: the crunch of dozens or hundreds of plastic cups littering the venue floor at the end of the show. How much less waste would there be if those cups — which number in the millions every year — could be washed and reused instead of dumped in a landfill? In an early major step in the right direction, the National Independent Venue Association (NIVA) has announced a partnership with r.Cup, a sustainable platform that provides reusable cups in an effort to replace single-use plastic cup use. – READ MORE
