INDUSTRY NEWS

Confronting Music’s Mental Health Crisis
A 2019 study found that 73 percent of independent music makers experience anxiety and depression in relation to their work. In 2021, the Journal of Psychiatric Research published a peer-reviewed report titled “Mental health issues among international touring professionals in the music industry”—based on a pre-pandemic survey of 1,154 individuals—that showed “greatly elevated” rates of clinical depression and stress in comparison to the general population, and levels of suicidality that are five times the average rate of the U.S. population. TikTok launches a Talent Manager Portal so managers can negotiate brand deals for clients
TikTok is making it easier for brands to work with its “megastar” creators with an update to its Creator Marketplace that now invites talent managers to oversee, execute and analyze the brand opportunities and campaigns being presented to their clients. The new service allows talent managers, with creator authorization, to log into the Creator Marketplace to manage deal flow, negotiate contracts on behalf of their talent, handle the creative feedback and review various reports and metrics about a campaign’s performance. The expansion allows TikTok to now not only serve the needs of creators with tens or hundreds of thousands of followers but those “celebrity-level” creators, as well. – READ MORE

Baisden tells us about his approach to management, building an independent artist business, and the changing power dynamics between traditional labels and the rising field of independent music entrepreneurs. – READ MORE

Sped up songs: why are music fans becoming captivated by quick TikTok hits?
RAYE’s ode to hedonism is just the latest in a growing list of songs that are enjoying widespread chart and streaming success following the popularity of their subsequent fan-made remixes. But despite online creators, social media sites and even labels feeling the positive impact of these quick remixes, there are still questions about what the success of these “Sped Up” songs say about the current state of online listening habits and ownership of music, as well as whether fan-created remixes will ultimately have a positive impact on the industry as a whole. It’s also worth clarifying at this point: what is the big appeal of sped-up tunes? – READ MORE
How did the Canadian music industry do in 2022? The year-end stats are out
Now that we’re into a new year, the recorded music industry is evaluating the last 12 months. Luminate (formerly Nielsen) is the company that monitors all the music Canadians buy and listen to, from streams to CDs to LPs to cassettes. In the olden days, we measured music consumption by the number of albums sold combined with radio airplay. Now things have to be weighted… Add everything together and Canadians consumed 11.2 per cent more music in 2022 than we did in 2021. – READ MORE
