Meet the exciting 2SLGBTQ rappers taking over Canada right now A December 2022 episode of Showtime’s The L Word: Generation Q opens with an intense orgy and an equally sensual soundtrack. The song that invites viewers into the scene is Vancouver non-binary rapper Kimmortal’s latest single, “This Dyke,” marking their first big TV song placement. They were thrilled by the opportunity because they have been watching The L Word “since I was a baby queer.” It’s also monumental as it illustrates Canada’s current, exciting rise of 2SLGBTQ hip hop like never before. – READ MORE
Why are music festivals facing so many challenges on the West Coast? It’s been just over a week since the Vancouver Folk Music Festival (VFMF) announced that it was forced to cancel this year—and perhaps indefinitely—and Mark Zuberbuhler, the VFMF’s board president, is feeling “really sad.” When it comes to West Coast music festivals, this turn of events is, unfortunately, nothing new. Though none have quite enjoyed the Folk Fest’s longevity, countless other local festivals over the years have struggled to move forward, despite successful and well-attended runs. READ MORE
Women Artists See Increase In Chart Representation, but ‘Little to no Growth’ in Songwriting and Production Female artists are increasing their presence on popular music charts, but representation behind the scenes is still an uphill battle. The latest findings of the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative’s “Inclusion in the Recording Studio?” report show a 7% increase in women artists from last year’s report, but the presence of female songwriters, producers, and engineers is still missing.Put together by Dr. Stacy L. Smith, the report’s results analyze gender and race/ethnicity for artists, songwriters, and producers appearing on the Billboard Hot 100 year-end charts. The data also evaluates Grammy nominees in the categories of record, album, song, songwriter and producer of the year, as well as best new artist. – READ MORE
Calls to end fees that venues charge artists to sell merch grow louder Testimony before the Senate judiciary committee and the operator of more than 10 live venues have added momentum to a movement demanding that music venues and promoters eliminate the fees they charge artists to sell merch at shows.Venues and promoters typically charge 15% to 35% of sales for the “privilege” of selling merch at their own shows, even though it’s the artist that’s drawn the fans doing the buying. In most instances, the artist must also pay to staff the merch table. “The argument is that the venue is providing us the retail space for us to sell our merch,” Clyde Lawrence of the indie band Lawrence told the Senate Judiciary Committee this week. “But we’re providing all of the customers and yet receive no cut from their many ancillary revenue streams.“ – READ MORE
Here Are All The 2023 Juno Nominations The nominees for the 2023 Juno Awards have been announced, and the Weeknd has come away with six nominations, making the singer the most-nominated artist this year — and matching his personal records for both 2016 and 2021. Pop-punk star Avril Lavigne and pop singer Tate McRae are tied for the second-highest number of nominations, with five each, while sibling country duo the Reklaws, pop star Shawn Mendes, R&B/pop singer Preston Pablo and electronic music producers Banx & Ranx each come away with three nominations.

Nearly 3 Out of 4 On-Demand Audio Streams is Coming from Music That’s 10 Years Old or Younger Catalog music eating into frontline music’s market share has become one of the music industry’s bigger talking points these past few years. The industry has historically defined ‘frontline’ as any release younger than 18 months old, while ‘catalog’ has counted as any music older than 18 months. But is ‘old’ music really getting that much more popular? Or does the definition of catalog need an adjustment in today’s streaming-led music industry – where audiences appear to be playing (and replaying) hit songs for far longer than they might once have done? – READ MORE
SPOTLIGHT OF THE WEEK
A combination of retro soul and modern R&B/pop flair, Mikey Jose’s familiar yet novel sound has been turning heads internationally and catching the attention of major global talent. Drawing comparisons to soulful heavy-hitters like Stevie Wonder and Leon Bridges, Jose carves his own lane that blends generational sounds while injecting his own fresh take on growing up in modern times. His latest collaborative single release “Making It Right” with Augie Bello and Harrison Finks is a testament to this, landing on Spotify editorial playlists “Retro Pop”, “NuFunk”, and “Soul in the City” next to similar sounds like Allen Stone, MAX, and Samm Henshaw.
Mikey and his band, known as “”Mikey Jose and The Bungalow”, have performed sold out shows in Vancouver’s biggest venues, from providing electric direct support performances for NYC’s soul-pop stars, Lawrence, to “[bringing] the house down” at local and international music festivals (Virgin Radio Vancouver). Jose is working on his sophomore EP (“beautiful life”) and debut full-length LP, both of which are set to roll out beginning in 2023.
Mikey is currently pursuing a PhD in Neuroscience at the University of British Columbia to understand the power of music in medicine.
