INDUSTRY NEWS

British Columbia Gets New Recording Studio
A new recording studio has come to BC’s interior. Propel Studios has taken over a former vacation rental space on Kootenay Lake in Kaslo to the province’s southeast.
A full production suite including a live room, isolation booths and a control room aren’t the only features of this new space; a 1,000-sq ft. deck overlooking Kootenay Lake and upper-floor living accommodations left over from the vacation rentals create a living space for recording artists.

Side Door’s Touring Program Supports Artists Financially En Route To Festivals In 2023
Touring has become a costly part of doing business as an artist today: inflation, skyrocketing travel, production costs, staff shortages, supply-chain issues, one positive COVID test away from derailing the whole thing, and a flooded market for venues — the ones that are still able to keep their doors open. This has led to a long line of artists publicly sharing that they are simply unable to make getting out on the road profitable. – READ MORE
Foreign Musicians Would Pay 250% More For Touring Visas Under US Homeland Security’s Proposed Rule Change
Touring in a foreign country ain’t cheap, and it might soon become even more expensive for artists to bring their music to the United States. The Department of Homeland Security has proposed significant price increases for the O-type and P-type visas granted to performers. Under the proposed change, the cost of an O-type visa petition would increase from $460 to $1,655 — an increase of 260%.  – READ MORE

UMG, TIDAL partner to develop an Artist & Fan-friendly streaming model
UMG is partnering with streaming service TIDAL to develop a new economic model for music streaming “that might better reward the value provided by artists” and more closely reflect fan engagement with the artist and music. UMG chief Lucien Grainge has been vocal in his belief that with 100,000 tracks uploaded daily, how payouts are calculated needs to change. Gruaibge has called for “an innovative, ‘artist-centric’ model that values all subscribers and rewards the music they love. – READ MORE

SPOTLIGHT OF THE WEEK

In a sea of attempted virality, Michaela Slinger is a life raft. She’s a “legendary songbird in the making” (MRG Group) at the intersection of pop, indie, and singer-songwriter, crafting new music that feels lived in. Her stop-you-dead vocals and poetic observations about love, ageing, and selfhood are showcased on her debut record ‘Panorama’ (604 Records) and recent singles including “Little Pieces” and “Can We Take The Night Off?”. Michaela’s songs have received consistent Spotify editorial playlisting, college and commercial radio play, and a #4 peak at Stingray Canada Indie, and her unforgettable live show has wowed crowds on stages such as Breaking Sound LA and Toronto, Khatsalano Street Fest, Tiny Lights Festival, NXNE, and Laketown Shakedown. Michaela’s sophomore album ‘This Can’t Last Forever’ (out June 2023) was written between Vancouver, Toronto, Nashville, and Los Angeles, and produced by multi-platinum JUNO-winner Ryan Stewart.
