6 Ways to Fix the Broken Concert Ticketing System Scoring tickets for your favorite artist’s tour seems tougher than ever, but there are practical steps the industry could take to make things better. Buying a ticket to a show shouldn’t feel like getting ripped off in a cryptocurrency scam. While Ticketmaster has been taking flak from concertgoers and artists alike since the Clinton administration, tensions hit a new high heading into this year, with issues involving Bruce Springsteen, Taylor Swift, and Bad Bunny tours all directing fresh ire toward the world’s biggest concert-ticket seller. – READ MORE
UMG-Tidal Collaboration Extends to Deezer and Video-Sharing Services: ‘The Artist-Centric Approach Is Not Limited Solely to Streaming’ Towards January’s end, after its CEO kicked off 2023 by touting the perceived potential of “artist-centric” music platforms, Universal Music Group (UMG) partnered with Tidal “to explore an innovative new economic model” for streaming. Now, the Big Three label has revealed that the collaboration is extending to different services yet. This latest development in UMG’s effort to retool streaming services’ compensation framework emerged in the company’s Q4 2022 earnings call. – READ MORE
Why are there so few women headlining music festivals? Glastonbury has been criticised for its all-male headliners but it’s far from the only one – the result of an industry that has deprioritised women for decades. Glastonbury caused consternation when it announced three male headliners this year, but it is far from the only event to have a complete lack of gender equality at the top of its bill. Latitude festival, End of the Road, All Points East and TRNSMT are just a few examples of major events that have no women headlining in 2023, and last year, a BBC report found that just 13% of UK headliners at the top 50 festivals were female. – READ MORE
Emerging Trends In Music Ownership Anyone can own music and it won’t take millions of dollars—fractional ownership is now a legitimate option. Even in an economic downturn, anyone can invest in and own music. In the past, music ownership traditionally resided with five entities: major labels, independent labels, publishing companies, artists and talent managers. Now, the tide has shifted with catalogs selling for record numbers: Justin Bieber ($200 million, Dr. Dre $200+ million and the biggest figure to date is Bob Dylan at an estimated $300-$400 million). – READ MORE
The Push to Ban TikTok in the US Isn’t About Privacy Fresh off their successful effort to ban TikTok on government devices last year, China hawks in the US Congress are looking to expand that ban further, even as lawmakers continue allowing US companies to scoop up Americans’ data and share or sell it with third parties—potentially including China’s government. The irony is largely lost on many in Congress. Lawmakers are renewing their calls for a nationwide TikTok ban and pushing the Biden administration to force a breakup of the Chinese-owned tech company. – READ MORE
A Visual Breakdown of Global Music Consumption To maximize any chance of success in the music business, aspiring artists must gain an understanding of how music is consumed and how that is changing alongside technology. This graphic from Athul Alexander highlights global music consumption habits. Data is from 2022 and is sourced from a survey of over 44,000 people from 22 countries by IFPI that asked people their primary mode for consuming music. As of 2022, paid subscription services (i.e. Apple Music, Spotify) are the most preferred option for listeners, accounting for nearly one-fourth of main platform share. – READ MORE
SPOTLIGHT OF THE WEEK
The Victoria, BC four-piece—brothers Nelson and Morgan Bankes on vocals and guitar, lead guitarist Carson Cleaver, and drummer Gray Oxley—formed in a pool hall one Friday night in 2017. Less than a week later, they played their first gig. Delivering a dynamic set list ranging from Otis Redding to Talking Heads, the former high school classmates were overwhelmed by an undeniable musical chemistry.
The result is In Waves, the first single off their upcoming 6-song EP. The track is like a shot of dopamine spilling over with irresistibly catchy melodies, exhilarating vocals, and joyous indie-rock instrumentation. Produced and recorded by indie legend Steve Bays (Hot Hot Heat, The Zolas, Mounties), the EP is the culmination of the band’s wide-ranging influences–from Elvis to The Strokes, Paul Simon to The Pixies—coming together in a way that defies sonic parallels, yet remains welcomingly familiar. The first release has the pretty grittiness of The Lumineers, the free-wheeling energy of the late-aughts indie bands, and the powerhouse belting of blues-rock contemporaries like Marcus King.
