How Asian–Canadian Artists Are Incorporating Their Heritage Into Their Music It may not be an inherent duty to display one’s heritage in one’s music, but the musicians interviewed have all found ways of addressing their Asianness, whether that’s using native instruments, performing in their mother tongue, or infusing historical sounds, time signatures and keys. Music Supervisors Are Making a Push For Serious Union Representation: ‘We Do Not Get the Same Workers’ Rights As Many of Our Colleagues’ The ongoing campaign to bring unionization to the world of music supervision just recently began making waves on social media. Of course, music supervisors’ job-related complaints, pertaining both to their workload and compensation, date back years, and it’s long been common knowledge that most in the sphere have rather full schedules. But this dissatisfaction looks to have reached a boiling point for some fed-up music supervisors, and a Twitter account called “Music Needs Supervision” appears to be leading the charge by firing off all manner of firmly worded tweets and hashtags. – READ MORE
Digital burnout: MMF says ‘labels and platforms must break the cycle’ Musicians feeling pressured to go viral on TikTok continue to make headlines: most recently with i-D’s ‘How virality is choking the music industry‘ piece. But this isn’t just about one platform. It’s a wider issue of musicians feeling overwhelmed by the full gamut of digital platforms they need to serve, from social media apps to music streaming services. At least this challenge is being talked about openly. Music Ally’s ‘digital burnout’ piece in January “struck a chord with music managers” according to management body the MMF, which proceeded to hold several roundtables with its membership to canvass their views on the pressures facing artists. – READ MORE
Music Marketplace Beatstars Has Paid Out $200M To Creators To Date Abe Batshon tells MBW that BeatStars is hoping to pay out close to $100 million this year and that the company has “plans to grow those earnings exponentially over the next 5 years with new innovative business models and global accessibility”. The platform, founded in 2009, announced in July 2020 that it had paid out $85 million up until that date to its creators since it launched. BeatStars, which has been the source of samples for hits like Lil Nas X’s Old Town Road, Card B’s Up, and Drake’s Lemmon Pepper Freestyle, reports to have 3 million active members in over 100 countries. – READ MORE
Music Management-Tools Startup IndieFlow Raises $4m Funding IndieFlow was founded in 2020 as a startup developing tools to help independent musicians manage their businesses. Now it has raised a $4m funding round to continue growing. The funding came from investors including State of Mind Ventures, Oryzn Capital and TechStars for a platform billing itself as ‘Shopify for Musicians’. Not that it’s just about merch and shopping: IndieFlow has built tools for musicians to manage projects, sync calendars with their team, plan releases and ping files back and forth, while also offering distribution, publishing administration and other features for managing live bookings, promotions and playlist pitching.– READ MORE

Isla Noir is a multi-instrumentalist who weaves a soulful performance of crystal vocals and moving piano melodies within a dark/dream pop landscape.
Her title EP single “Hawkmen” was synced in Spike Lee’s Netflix series “She’s Gotta Have It.” as well as the instrumental featuring on Australian fashion brand “Decjuba” TVC. With a voice as sweet as honey and Eurasian heritage, she commands a soulful yet strong presence, both on and off the stage.
Aside from writing and producing dark pop, she scored for horror film “Screaming At Stars”, which is currently playing at the Chicago international film festival, and won best film at the Hollywood Screenings Film Festival.
