Black Music Action Coalition Criticizes The Country Music Industry
The streaming era has seen a growing discussion of diversity within the country music world. The conversation has often focused on gender: Martina McBride criticising Spotify’s recommendation algorithms in 2019 for example, or a SongData study the same year showing how few women found their way onto the US year-end country airplay radio charts. Now a report from the Black Music Action Coalition is training the lens on another aspect of diversity in country music: race. It builds on another SongData report, 2021’s ‘Redlining in Country Music‘ with some stats showing the challenges for non-white artists in getting signed and played on country radio. READ MORE
The Major Labels Soaked Up 58.6% of $9.8 Billion In Streaming Royalties During 2021
This and other interesting datapoints came to light during NMPA head David Israelite’s recent speech in New York City, delivered as part of his organization’s annual meeting. “We now have, for the first time, a treasure trove of information that has never before been made public until now,” said Israelite. “There are 47 different music services that operate 151 different models that pay mechanical royalties to songwriters. We now know that in 2021, those services combined generated nearly $9.8 billion in revenue, which is just one of the important factors by which songwriters get paid. – READ MORE

From the late 60s onwards, Elliot had steered the fabled careers of Joni Mitchell and Neil Young, while also co-managing the likes of Tom Petty and The Eagles in later decades. He was among the legendary old guard of managers who defined the emerging music industry and shaped the direction of popular culture. From the lineage of Colonel Tom Parker (Elvis), to Brian Epstein (The Beatles), to Albert Grossman (Bob Dylan), to Elliot Roberts, the talent manager became the central foundation of an artist’s team.  – READ MORE

Singer-Songwriter Caitlin Goulet Shares Raw Truths In Dreamy Alt-Pop & Alternative R&B
“People kind of expect an Indigenous artist to exclusively share cultural music. Actually, a lot of us make contemporary music and contemporary art, and we deserve a space and a voice.” For Goulet, singing is a way to explore and express things in a unique way and in a safe and comfortable place. “For a long time I felt like music was really the only place I could speak the ugly truths about life and the things I’ve been through and the things I think or believe,” Goulet says.  – READ MORE
