GoFundMe Launched For Olivia Quan Memorial Scholarship Family, friends and colleagues of late Vancouver-based audio engineer Olivia Quan have launched a crowdfunding effort to create a memorial scholarship in her name. After experiencing a brain bleed, 25-year-old Quan died on July 1 — mere weeks after she attended this year’s JUNO Awards with three projects nominated. To honour her work and inspire future generations to emulate her dedication to the craft, Quan’s loved ones have organized a GoFundMe fundraiser to create a scholarship fund in her memory.

Why Mood Is The New Musical Genre Several months ago, Spotify’s 2021 Wrapped helped answer this daunting question through its “Audio Auras”—a visualization of two adjectives describing each user’s listening habits: be it wistful and comforting, happy and cozy, or energetic and bold. These keywords are chosen based on collected data, reducing the complicated nuances of taste into simple descriptors. In the age of individualism, it feeds on the push to define one’s brand.– READ MORE
Facebook To Share Ad Revenue With Creators, Music Rights Holders On UGC As rumoured, Meta announced on Monday that it will be changing the way artists and music rights holders are paid from Facebook, moving to a revenue-sharing model for user-generated video content, although it has not shared full details. In the new system, video creators who use licensed music in videos over 60 seconds long on Facebook will receive a 20% share of any advertising revenue generated by their videos.– READ MORE
Warner Music Group Officially Adopts ‘Fan-Powered’ Royalty Model On SoundCloud About three months after celebrating the anniversary of its fan-powered royalty model, SoundCloud has officially inked a global licensing deal with Warner Music Group. Under the pact, WMG will become the first major label to support payouts based upon actual listening as opposed to a portion of total streams. Multiple artists have offered positive assessments of fan-powered royalties, which deliver the monthly revenue (less fees) of each subscriber or ad-supported user to the creators whose work they enjoyed. – READ MORE
From Travel Woes To Inflation, Music Festivals Face Most Unpredictable Summer Yet In recent weeks, festival leaders have convened through texts and phone conversations to share the hurdles of running a successful event in 2022. They’ve talked about rising costs tied to inflation, supply issues for stage equipment and a shortage of experienced workers. Each music festival has its own unique blend of problems to overcome, but common among them is the fear that something will prevent top-billed performers from reaching the stage. That’s what happened with the Bass Coast electronic music festival in Merritt, B.C. earlier this month when flight delays left about half of their Sunday lineup stranded. – READ MORE
TikTok Is Paying Creators Even Less Than YouTube Does Last year TikTok’s revenue was around $4 billion globally, yet it only paid the music industry $179 million. That amounts to 4.5% of total revenue. YouTube, on the other hand, generated almost $28.9 billion during that period. It paid the music industry around $4 billion, which comes out to almost 14% of its revenue. That means that if all things were equal, YouTube pays artists and songwriters almost 3 times more than TikTok! Now if you get into the weeds of the data you can find things like YouTube only included advertising revenue and not subscriptions, and the TikTok number didn’t include fees to songwriters, but none of that changes the conclusion that the music industry is not getting its fair share from TikTok.

How The Music Industry Silences Women and Nonbinary People There is an undeniable problem. But without a clear path to justice, many survivors have instead used social media to speak out; posting photos or video evidence and detailing horrific events, often prompting others to come forward. However, even with the support they receive online, there are still roadblocks when it comes to accusing high-profile figures of abuse. In the UK, strict libel laws mean that speaking out on your own experiences can lead to defamation suits, silencing victims once again.– READ MORE
Music and Artificial Intelligence: Implications for Artists and the Industry Artificial intelligence-powered tools can now provide insight into many of the questions that previously confounded stakeholders across the music industry. Clearly, AI technology is here to stay. Yet it’s being applied in new and innovative ways beyond understanding listeners and their preferences: It has become the latest method for creating music. – READ MORE

Embodying the energy & ferocity of their animal namesake, Hyaenas is a new Indie Rock band breaking into the Canadian music scene. Their 6 track debut EP Little Trophy, produced by Elisa Pangsaeng (Yukon Blonde, Said the Whale) and Jesse Gander (The Pack AD, White Lung), is set for release in early 2023 with singles dropping throughout 2022.
Hyaenas songs are written through a queer feminist lens – exploring themes from acceptance to vigilance; celebrating nature, self-worth, and social justice. Their sound draws inspiration from 80’s icons The Go-Go’s to modern day Indie darlings Warpaint, and synth-pop power quartet Metric.
Sophie Heppell (guitar, vocals), Jessie Robertson (bass), Jen Foster (drums) and Luvia Petersen (synth) have a palpable chemistry making this brand new band feel like it has always been.
