Inside The Multi-Billion Dollar Battle Royale Over Music-Streaming Royalties
It’s hard to think of a more brain-deadening topic than the U.S. Copyright Royalty Board’s proceedings over the rates for music streaming. But deep in the dense legalese lies a heated battle over the billions of dollars in royalties generated by streaming services — one that pits the music industry against some of the biggest companies in the world. At stake is nothing less than the future of the music business and the livelihood of the American songwriter. Says veteran music attorney Chris Castle, “This is not the way people who have an economically interdependent long-term relationship treat each other.” – READ MORE
Snapchat Launches Creator Fund For Independent Music-Makers
Snapchat last week announced a new Creator Fund which will pay out money to independent artists whose music is being placed into videos by the social media firm’s users via its Sounds audio clip library. The new fund builds on Snapchat’s existing partnership with DIY distributor Distrokid, which announced a scheme last year to allow independent artists to get their music into the Snapchat Sounds library.

Why Music, Especially Old Music, Can Tap Into Our Deepest, Most Meaningful Life Memories
Many of us are familiar with a song evoking a certain memory: a song comes on at a party or on the radio, and instantly, we’re transported to another chapter of our lives, to a time or moment when that song weaved its way into our lives. The connection is one of the reasons why music — especially old music — is so meaningful to people. It’s also why music became such an important coping strategy during the COVID-19 pandemic. – READ MORE

Why The Debate Over Fan-Powered Royalties Is More Complicated Than ‘Fairness’
Just over a year ago, SoundCloud made a pioneering move: It transferred around 100,000 independent artists who were being paid on a ‘pro rata’ basis to being paid on an ‘FPR’ basis. It was able to do so because, fairly uniquely at this point, SoundCloud is both a distributor/services provider to these artists, as well as a royalty-paying music streaming platform. Last week, research firm Midia released a very interesting report with SoundCloud, investigating the impact this switch to ‘Fan-Powered Royalties’ has had on 118,000 independent artists now being paid via that model on the platform. – READ MORE

After dominating the short-video market, TikTok may be considering a music service
The short-form video app is already a popular tool for discovering music, and oftentimes can lead to songs rising in popularity after they’re used in viral videos and trends. A report released by the company last year suggested that 175 songs that trended on the short-video platform ended up on the Billboard 100 chart. In addition, a recent report published by a U.K.-based music investor suggested that songs that are popular on TikTok drive additional views on YouTube and streams on other platforms, like Spotify.

MEMBER OF THE WEEK

Connor Nelson’s music emits layers of pop with a hint of nostalgia. Though his sultry vocals are laced with R&B, his accompaniment presents the perfect mash up of indie pop, dark pop, and electropop. The Vancouver-born singer-songwriter uses music as a medium to connect to his feelings and hopes to deliver the message to his listeners that “it’s okay to allow yourself to feel every emotion and they are not alone in whatever they feel.”

Connor distinguished himself as a musician from a young age. He had won the Youth Talent Search BC in Port Moody in 2014 and made the top 4 in season 5 of “The Shot”. He broke out onto the world stage as a singer songwriter in 2019, just a month shy of his high school graduation, with his debut single ‘Psychic’ which garnered over 100K streams on Spotify in less than a year.

Connor draws inspiration from the likes of Taylor Swift, Lorde, and Isaac Dunbar to name a few, and as of 2021, Connor received a diploma in music production, which has allowed him to sing, write, and produce almost all of his songs. His newest single “21”, was a collaboration with Juno nominated producer Nathan Chiu. Connor plans to release more singles in 2022.
