NEW TOOLS FOR EMERGING ARTISTS

We are always happy to share new tools for emerging artists! Side Door has just launched their redesigned and refined platform earlier this week. Side Door are now returning to their main purpose – which was always to connect artists with hosts to create in-person shows. Artists need places to play and efficient tools to source them.

At the core of the new platform is a new tool called “Show Calls,” which allows artists and hosts to broadcast their availability (for single shows or an entire tour) to their fan bases and the Side Door community at large.

You can read the full platform update and hear from co-founders, Laura Simpson and Dan Mangan through the link below.

Hundreds Of Venues Sign Up To Not Take Cut Of Artists’ Merchandise Sales – But Campaigners Want More
A campaign to stop music venues from taking a cut of artists’ merchandise sales is proving successful, but campaigners say that more live music spaces still need to sign up. Back in January, the Featured Artists Coalition (FAC) announced a new directory highlighting music venues that charge zero commission on the sale of merchandise. The ‘100% Venues’ database aimed to address the “outdated and unfair” practice of performance spaces taking a cut of acts’ merch proceeds at gigs. – READ MORE
When We Do Get In The Door, Do We Have To Comply With The Way Things Have Always Been?
Cookie Pryce is a pioneer of Black British music who went on to become a trailblazing Black female exec within the UK industry. As a teenager, she and childhood friend Susan Banfield (Susie Q) formed Cookie Crew, a rap duo from South London who pre-dated artists such as Wee Papa Girl Rapas and Monie Love. When the group ran out of steam (and enthusiasm), Pryce re-invented herself as an executive, working on both sides of the Atlantic, in press, promotions, marketing, live – and now as Senior Label Manager at The Orchard.

TikTok’s SoundOn Service Allows Official Pre-Releases Of Songs
TikTok’s marketing and distribution platform SoundOn has launched Pre-Release, “a self-service feature that empowers artists to give TikTok listeners exclusive access to clips in advance of releasing their tracks.” The idea is to get users hyped before the official release date, encouraging them to pre-save songs, or to test out tracks with fans. The new feature is available in all markets where SoundOn operates. As artists become more focused on TikTok, this new feature poses an interesting question: where does the “leak date” end and the “release date” begin? – READ MORE

SoundCloud To Lay Off 20% Of Global Workforce Due To ‘The Challenging Economic Climate & Financial Market Headwinds’
SoundCloud CEO Michael Weissman acknowledged the unfortunate news in a LinkedIn post today, following a general statement from the company itself. “Earlier today,” wrote Weissman, “I shared the news that we have decided to make reductions to our global team that will impact up to 20% of our company. Making changes that affect people is incredibly hard. But it is one that is necessary to ensure SoundCloud’s long-term success given the challenging economic climate and financial market headwinds. – READ MORE

Junos Moving To A Monday To Avoid Oscar Night
Organizers at the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences say next year’s show in Edmonton will shift to March 13, from its original date of March 12. The decision comes after CARAS was faced with the prospect of the Junos competing for viewers with the Academy Awards. Moving one night means the show will unfold on a Monday instead of its usual Sunday celebration. “This new date will provide greater access to a wider audience and give Canadian artists the attention their extraordinary works deserves,” the Junos said in a statement.

Springsteen’s ‘Dynamic’ Ticket Prices The Latest Twist In Ticketmaster Saga
If you’ve been to even a single concert in the last few decades, you’ve probably spent some time trying to answer one question: “How does Ticketmaster get away with charging so much?” That question recently centred on blue-collar hero Bruce Springsteen. Two weeks ago, after spending hours waiting in a digital line to get tickets for his upcoming North American tour, many fans of the Boss came face to face with all that was left: “dynamic price” tickets — which shift up and down based on demand — going for as much as $5,000 US, with all of the more modestly priced face-value tickets long gone.

MEMBER OF THE WEEK

Picnic on the Moon is a full-circle record for folk-pop duo Fionn, revisiting the sound and spirit of their heralded first releases; however, their path to this point has been anything but predictable.

After all, the duo only dropped their self-titled debut in 2018, though they’ve been quite prolific since, developing a songwriting palette in a few years that even career artists would kill for.

Their latest finds the sisters leaning on their Celtic roots and limiting their palette with organic instrumentation. It’s still catchy as hell, relying on musicianship, songwriting acumen, and authenticity for hooks instead of high-tech tools.

Fionn are eager to be back onstage after the pandemic’s forced hiatus and will surely return to pushing musical boundaries with subsequent recordings. For now, though, Picnic on the Moon revisits the pure, undiluted creative prowess that propelled them to fame in the first place.
