Shortlist Shortcut To Snotty Nose Rez Kids’ ‘Life After’
To help music fans get to know the 10 Polaris Music Prize-nominated albums, CBC Music presents the Shortlist Shortcut series. Every week, we will ask a nominated artist for a recommended track off their shortlisted record. Perhaps it’s a song that best represents the themes on the album, or maybe it’s the most important, difficult or rewarding song they wrote. The question was left to the artist to interpret, but the hope is that the selected track will give us a pathway into their work.  – READ MORE
How Grammy Wins and Losses Shape Artists’ Creative Trajectories
A new study by Balázs Kovács, an associate professor of organizational behavior at Yale SOM, and his colleagues suggests that these career nods might come with an artistic downside. The researchers analyzed Grammy awards over six decades and tracked how much the winners and nominees “differentiated” themselves from other musicians afterward—that is, whether their albums became more or less similar to those by others in their genre.

Spotify Starts Selling Live Music Tickets To Fans Directly
Spotify has launched a new site to sell fans tickets to live gigs directly from its platform instead of redirecting users to partners like Ticketmaster and Eventbrite. The company’s new website lists upcoming concerts and lets users purchase tickets to these shows through debit or credit card; users need to have a Spotify account to buy tickets, though. The company hasn’t officially announced the launch of its ticketing platform, but Chris Messina first noted the site being available for the public to book tickets earlier today. – READ MORE

Xposure Music Opens Up Its New Feedback Service For Artists

The company was founded in 2021, then launched an invitation-only version of its service this July. Now that’s opening up to all artists. It works by getting musicians to sign up and submit their music (for free) to its roster of experts from labels, management firms, marketing agencies and social media companies. – READ MORE

TikTok Owns A Patent For Music Service & Is Hiring For ‘TikTok Music’ Staff
TikTok, eh? Is it becoming a record label? Or is it just a social media giant that also acts as a music distributor? Could it soon add ‘music streaming service’ to the list? Business Insider recently discovered a US trademark application filed by TikTok parent company ByteDance for ‘TikTok Music’. The proposed application, originally filed in Australia in November, followed by the US in May, would allow users to “purchase, play, share, download music, songs, albums, lyrics” as well as “live stream audio and video”. – READ MORE
How Do Songs Get Picked for TV?
A belated boost in a song’s chart position after a sync—the industry term for use of music in film and TV—seems to be happening more often, and more powerfully. It’s a widely observed phenomenon, noted by Slate, Billboard, and The Ringer, probably attributable to the current ease of streaming old music, the amplificatory effects of social media, and TV’s recent dominance of the cultural center.   READ MORE
Lyric Changes Show The Evolving Relationship Between Fan And Artist
Several pop stars have removed offensive slurs from new songs in recent weeks after calls from fans — a sign that the relationship between music artists and their listeners is evolving. Lizzo made headlines in June for removing the word “s–z” from her song, Grrrls. The term, according to disability advocates, is an offensive slur against people with cerebral palsy and other disabilities.
