Jumpstart Foundations is an on-demand video series presented by industry professionals and specialists. We are thrilled to announce two new modules in our series featuring Hollywood Jade and Meagan Davidson.
Hollywood Jade – Standing in the Spotlight
Alongside North America’s most noteworthy choreographers, Hollywood Jade has been involved in the choreography for TV performances, tours, music videos and award shows for some of the globe’s biggest names, including Keshia Chanté, Snoop Dogg, Estelle, Bebe Rexha, and Meghan Trainor. In this session, Hollywood will offer guidance and inspiration for how artists and performers can overcome that nagging critical voice that diminishes creative output and flow. The session will outline how to acknowledge your inner saboteur, challenge those destructive and self-doubting thoughts and where to find your support system both internal and external.
Meagan Davidson – Funding & Grant Writing Explained
This session will offer guidance to new and growing members of the music community – both on the business side and on the artist side. The instructor shall review the funding system in brief, including what programs are available and to whom. As well the session will introduce some best practices for preparing for your grant submission, and some tips on keeping organized for that final grant report.

TikTok Curators Are Helping Songs Go Viral – And Labels Are Writing The Checks TikTokers used to find music primarily thorugh dance trends. Now they’re gravitating to creators who recommend new songs. Spencer Stewart got on TikTok in 2020 hoping to promote his own music. He began to post every single day as Syspence, settling on an initial strategy to capture viewers: Uploading a clip about the rise of a well-known artist like Juice WRLD, and then “figuring out a way to loop the video around to my song” so he could plug his own work as well. – READ MORE

How Artists Are Exploiting Lax Metadata Protections By Streaming Services At such a scale, metadata becomes a very thorny subject; DSPs, at the mercy of the quality of information provided to them, are sorting through an almost unmanageable wave of data. In response to this growing issue, Spotify, for instance, has unveiled a dedicated Content Mismatch tool via its Spotify For Artists platform – one imagines thousands of artists and rightsholders make use of it every day. – READ MORE
Vinyl Could Go Green by Losing Its Namesake Green Vinyl Records is breaking ground on pressing machines that forego it for polyethylene terephthalate (Pet) — a less-harmful material that is equally durable and easily recyclable. The novel pressing technology also uses just 10 percent of the energy required by standard vinyl pressing as we currently know it. Likewise, it caters to the increased demand with a capacity to produce nearly 40 percent more records than traditional pressing plants. “The pressing here is both faster and better for our planet,” owner Harm Theunisse told the BBC. – READ MORE
It’s Time For Big-Name Artists To Join Music’s New Labor Movement At the start of the pandemic, when live music had been shut down, a group of independent musicians and music workers started meeting weekly on Zoom to share ideas about what we could do to improve the difficult situation we faced. Out of those meetings grew a new advocacy organization, the Union of Musicians and Allied Workers (UMAW). And among the actions UMAW undertook was a reexamination of the streaming music economy. From the ground up, you might say—how it looks to actual working musicians.– READ MORE

Can Canadian Musicians Afford to Tour Anymore? With the COVID-19 pandemic still raging, so many artists are unable to get their tours off the ground. But those who do manage to get on the road are finding it’s not any easier: with Canada’s inflation rate at its highest since the 1980s due to skyrocketing gas prices, it’s now even harder to tour the massive country, a difficult undertaking under even the best of circumstances. And all while trying to dodge COVID-19. Daniel Monkman was already asking themself “Is touring still sustainable?” four years ago, when they were starting to build an audience for their now-acclaimed shoegaze project Zoon. – READ MORE
