INDUSTRY NEWS
Canadian pop newcomer Jessia is rising to new heights Jessia’s rise to fame is a classic Cinderella story—with a modern, TikTokky twist. Last year was a particularly rough time for the Vancouver-based vocalist. She’d lost her serving job—and all of her music gigs—due to COVID. “I was eating up all my savings just to survive,” she says. Jessia was sitting in her car the day she recorded the video clip that would launch her into viral territory. “Maybe I’m not pretty, maybe I’m just fun, ’cause I got a belly, and I got a bum,” she sang, pounding out a beat on the steering wheel. Within hours, the clip had surpassed a million views on TikTok. “I thought there was a glitch in the system,” she recalls.– READ MORE
Live Nation to Introduce Reusable Cups at Venues and Festivals, a Major Step Toward ‘Zero-Waste Concerts’ Anyone who’s been to a concert knows the sound: The crunch of hundreds of plastic cups underfoot, which are used once and thrown away, creating countless acres of garbage. Live Nation Entertainment has made a move to reduce that waste at its venues and festival via a strategic investment in Turn Systems, which operates a leading reusable cup system. According to the announcement, it is “another step in the company’s goal to eliminate single-use plastics and work toward zero-waste concerts.” – READ MORE
Spotify And Fellow Music Streamers Strike Agreement With Publishers Go-Forward Royalty Rate In The U.S. [This] historic music biz battle began in 2018, when the NMPA (National Music Publishers’ Association) secured a vital ruling from the Copyright Royalty Board (CRB) in the United States. Said ruling increased the headline percentage of US revenue that on-demand streamers had to pay to songwriters and publishers in the region – from 10.5% to 15.1%. –READ MORE

TikTok is upending the music industry and Spotify may be next TikTok, owned by China’s ByteDance, is turning the music business on its head by increasingly becoming a hit-making machine. Artists can go from obscurity to global superstardom, thanks to a viral video that could be posted by a complete stranger. Even Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams” reentered the charts in 2020 after a clip of a man drinking cranberry juice on a skateboard exploded on the app. Record labels, artists and creators are all trying to figure out how to profit in the new TikTok-dominated world and to make sure they’re not getting left behind. – READ MORE

Music Distributor Sound Legends Is Shaking Up the US-Centric Distributor Model – While Creating the ‘Entry Point for International Artists’ In a quiet bow over the summer, a new player entered the crowded field of digital music distribution with a globally-focused model. Sound Legends’ global outlook is their self-touted unbeatable competitive advantage. While music distribution is arguably a mature space, Sound Legends believes that existing digital distributors remain focused on markets such as the US, owing to the higher monthly fee first-world artists are capable of paying (and receiving).

SPOTLIGHT OF THE WEEK
Nick Minteko is a multi-instrumentalist and songwriter from Victoria, BC. My music is often a way for me to self soothe, or celebrate small victories. Another way to put it is that my poetry, when put in a musical context, helps me share and experience life more fully with my friends, family, and anybody really. I have lots of far reaching roots in music and composition. My musical influences, education, professional, and personal experience range across genres (including Folk, Jazz, RnB, Rock, and many more) and are contextualized by my life and love of art. I have toured across North America and Europe, written 100 songs, recorded maybe a dozen albums. I’ve done it all as a sideman and a bandleader, and I’d do it again.
