‘Sounds on Shorts’ boosts music discovery from YouTube Shorts
YouTube’s TikTok-style Shorts feature is growing rapidly: up to 30bn daily views and 1.5 billion monthly viewers according to the company’s latest stats. Musicians have played a prominent role in YouTube’s marketing efforts for Shorts so far: Blackpink, Ed Sheeran and BTS for example. Now YouTube is forging a deeper link between Shorts and its YouTube Music service with a feature called ‘Sounds on Shorts’. It’s a button at the bottom of every Shorts video that shows viewers other clips using the same audio. If it’s music, they can also visit a ‘sound pivot page’ to see what the track is and who it’s by.

At Long Last, Victoria Welcomed Rifflandia Back with Open Arms
After so much struggle and effort, it feels like a magnificent victory that Rifflandia not only came back, but also outdid itself in many ways. Even before the pandemic kicked the world’s live music scene squarely in the wallet, the long-running multi-genre, multi-venue festival had been placed on hiatus, forced to cancel its 2019 edition, and organizers cited the need for “careful attention to ensure that Rifflandia is able to thrive for years to come.”  – READ MORE
Pierre Kwenders wins the 2022 Polaris Music Prize
Pierre Kwenders has won the 2022 Polaris Music Prize for his 2022 album, José Louis and the Paradox of Love.  An 11-member jury selected the record as the Canadian album of the year, based solely on artistic merit. This announcement was made at the Carlu in Toronto on Sept. 19, at Polaris’s first in-person celebration since 2019 due to the pandemic. In his emotional acceptance speech, Kwenders paid tribute to three family members he lost recently: his two cousins and his godfather. “The reason why I do what I do, why I tell the story that I tell,” he said, “is to tell the story of the people that inspire me. All those three people inspired me.”

BMI Paid Out Nearly $1.5 Billion To Songwriters And Publishers In The Past Year, Up 10% YOY
US-based performance rights company BMI (Broadcast Music Inc.) posted record-breaking revenue and royalty payments to songwriters, composers, and publishers in the year ended June 30. Payouts to songwriters, composers and publishers in the recent fiscal year rose 10% year over year, or by $136 million, to $1.47 billion. Overall revenue (collections) jumped 16%, or by $212 million, to $1.57 billion, the company said Tuesday (September 13). Patreon layoffs are latest wobble for the creator economy
If the creator economy is booming, why are some of the most prominent creator-economy companies in the music industry’s orbit laying off staff? It’s a question you can expect to be hearing more often, as the excitement around trends in social media and DIY artistry fails to insulate companies serving these sectors from economic headwinds. Or, indeed, hubris. Yesterday, Patreon laid off 80 staff – around 17% of its workforce – with CEO Jack Conte describing the move as an unavoidable “last resort” in response to what’s happening in the tech industry and the wider economy, as well as overexpansion during the initial impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. – READ MORE

Music recommendation algorithms increase gender gap by promoting fewer female artists, study suggests
Music recommendation algorithms could be amplifying the industry’s existing gender bias problem, according to a study that proposes a new method allowing greater exposure for female artists. The existence of a gender bias in the music industry is not unknown. For instance, a study of the top five music charts in the UK between the years 1960-1995 showed how popular music is affected by a large gender inequality with a bias in listening preferences towards male artists. A recent analysis of music festivals found that lineups are heavily skewed towards male performers and this bias is also said to be prevalent in music streaming apps like Spotify. – READ MORE
Artist development platform Xposure aims to open a “new front door” to the music business
When aspiring artists vie for the attention of A&Rs, producers and managers, it often means they are ignored and discouraged, while music industry professionals end up being inundated with DMs and emails that are almost impossible to organize and search through. Enter: Xposure Music, a Montreal-based start-up whose goal is to open a “new front door” to the music industry by providing a platform that benefits both musicians and those who want to discover them. “Our mission is not only to improve access, but also to enable happy coincidences,” says Gregory Walfish, co-founder of Xposure Diversity. “We wanted to condense what could take months of outreach or thousands of dollars to be in the right place at the right time into an engaging interaction for artists and professionals. We want to help people find that breakout moment.”

Musicians are back on the road, but every day is a gamble
COVID rates in the U.S. stayed relatively high this spring and summer, and have only recently begun to dip (though the official stats don’t account for unreported home tests). But beyond the numbers, many musicians have found a set of complex and wearying tradeoffs await them on tour lately. The maze-like logistics of COVID safety are theirs to navigate, with little support from governments or their industry. Mask mandates and similar risk-reduction policies have evaporated. And audiences, perhaps starved for social connection and a sense of normalcy, have largely reverted to pre-pandemic behavior. For those operating below the very highest levels of success and infrastructure, the increased health and financial risks of mounting live music — and the burden of trying to avoid them — tend to fall hardest on the individual performers.
