‘The More Inclusive We Become, The More Successful We Will Be.’ Last year, Doreen Schimk was named co-President of Warner Music Central Europe alongside Fabian Drebes, with the duo claiming the first dual leadership of a major label in Germany. Since taking on the co-Presidency title, she tells us she’s been focused on building a culture of belonging for both artists and staff, as well as strengthening the label’s domestic business. Fruits of that labour include the launch of Atlantic Records Germany, which is focused on German hip-hop. Schimk says: “We want this label to be a place for culturally relevant artists and have more of an indie, start-up mentality, rather than the typical major label approach.” – READ MORE
Will AI Lead to New Creative Frontiers, or Take the Pleasure Out of Music? At Barcelona’s Sónar festival last fall, artist and researcher Mat Dryhurst stepped up to the microphone and began to sing, but the voice of his wife—the electronic musician and technologist Holly Herndon—came out instead. The performance was part of a demonstration of Holly+, Herndon’s latest experiment in artificial intelligence, which takes one sound and, through the magic of a neural net, turns it into another. Imagine Nicolas Cage and John Travolta swapping visages in Face Off, only this time it’s their voices that trade places. The effect—watching Herndon’s voice emit from Dryhurst’s mouth—was uncanny. It was also a likely sign of things to come, of a world of shapeshifting forms looming on the horizon: identity play, digital ventriloquism, categories of art and artifice we don’t even have names for yet. – READ MORE
Youtube Launches Revenue-Sharing Programs for Shorts, Music Licensing Youtube Shorts, the video platform’s short-form competitor to TikTok, is launching an ad revenue sharing program that will give creators a 45 percent. cut, which will be determined based on their share of total Shorts views. Unlike advertising on traditional YouTube videos, Shorts ads are displayed in between videos and are not necessarily tried to a specific creator’s content. For the Shorts revenue sharing program, which will begin in early 2023, YouTube will pool together the total revenue from all Shorts ads, and the payout will go towards creators and paying for music licensing costs, Neal Mohan, YouTube’s chief product officer, said at an event on Tuesday. – READ MORE
No More Dueling Music Charts: Luminate and Mediabase Will Join Forces to Power Billboard’s Radio Airplay Rankings For years, the radio world has looked to two different sets of radio charts — the Billboard rankings, which are currently powered by BDS, owned by Luminate (formerly known as Nielsen Music), and separate charts from the airplay monitoring service Mediabase. But that dueling-charts era is coming to an end. Luminate announced Thursday morning that, beginning in December 2022, use of BDS will cease and Luminate will begin partnering with Mediabase, which it says is “known widely as the music industry standard across labels, publishers and management companies,” for the charts published in Billboard. – READ MORE
