MUSIC BC’S 2024 ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

Music BC’s Annual General Meeting is in just under two weeks! This year’s AGM will be held virtually on WednesdayOctober 23rd, 2024 at 5:00 PM (PST).

During the meeting, Music BC Members will have the opportunity to help shape the Board of Directors, as well as learn about our organization’s vision for 2025 and beyond.

Interested in running for a seat on the Board of Directors? Our deadline for expressions of interest is tomorrow, October 11th, 2024. Please reach out to emily@musicbc.org for more information, and to express your intent to run.

To be eligible for consideration, a candidate must meet the following qualifications:

  • Be a Music BC member in good standing
  • Be 19 years of age or older
  • Believe in the mission, vision and work of the Organization
  • Attend 4-6 board meetings per year (currently held digitally), approx. 6-9hrs/year
  • Participate in at least one sub-committee (2-3 virtual meetings per year), approx. 2-3hrs/year
  • Must be available by phone and email 
  • Support ongoing Music BC events in person whenever possible
  • Attend the 2024, 2025 and 2026 AGM, if possible, approx. 1.5-2hrs/year

Our board is currently made up of eleven directors which are all volunteered positions. This year there are six (6) seats to be filled (each seat is a two-year term).

We’ll see you at this years’ AGM!

Music BC’s next intake of Travel Grants for Artists and Businesses is open NOW! – including showcase, touring and business travel.

2024/25 Travel Grant application windows are as follows:

Business Envelope Travel

  • Applications are open now!  (Read guidelines here)
  • Application Deadline: November 8th, 2024 at 5:00PM (PST)
  • This program will be accepting applications to support initiatives that take place between August 1st, 2024, and July 31st, 2025.

COME TOGETHER TORONTO: LIMITED GENERAL ADMISSION TICKETS RELEASED

We are thrilled to once again be hosting Come Together, an initiative for artists ready to break into Canada’s largest music market. Presented by Canada’s Music Industry Associations and SODEC. As a collective, these organizations are working together to present two days of industry showcases, networking, education and meetings in Toronto this November.

Join us on Monday, November 25th and Tuesday, November 26th bringing some of the most promising acts from across Canada to Toronto, ON. Catch BC acts NIKKAELA and The Bankes Brothers lighting up the stage!

Remembering Nell Smith.

Our most heartfelt condolences go out to her family, friends, and everyone who had the privilege of working with her.

CIMA will be returning to The Great Escape in Brighton, UK in May 2025! Canada House showcases will be hosted on site, providing business opportunities for participating Canadian artists and companies. The Great Escape is the festival for new music, showcasing 500+ emerging artists from all over the world in 30+ walkable venues across the city. Music industry professionals from across the globe descend on The Great Escape to discover new music and attend the conference run alongside the showcasing component which features panels, keynote speeches, networking opportunities and more.

They will once again be in attendance for this key showcase & business development opportunity at the most influential and largest music festival & conference in North America. Canada House will take over Swan Dive and transform the venue into all things Canadian for two full days of showcases & business events.

HER MUSIC AWARDS
SOCAN Foundation’s “Her Music Awards”, presented by Anthem Entertainment, are designed to celebrate and support female-identified Canadian mid-career music creators who are on the verge of taking their creative careers to the next level. All genres of music are welcome. Eligible applications will be considered by a jury of prominent Canadian music creators. Excellence demonstrated through Artistic Merit will be an overriding consideration in the adjudication, in addition to thoughtful demonstration of how the Award would help advance the applicant’s career.

WOMEN IN MUSIC CANADA: LEADERSHIP ACCELERATOR
Presented with liaison partners ADVANCE Canada’s Black Music Industry Collective, the International Indigenous Music Summit, and ArtHaus, this program prepares women and gender-diverse professionals for executive leadership roles. This program is intended for mid-level industry professionals, in existing music companies or entrepreneurs, with a primary goal of preparing women and gender diverse music professionals for advancement to senior management and director-level opportunities.

Spotify Raising Prices in Canada While Challenging Proposed ‘Streaming Tax’
The Online Streaming Act was implemented this year after extensive consultations last fall. The base contributions from major streamers are expected to generate 200 million in funds for Canadian content, with the contributions directed toward “areas of immediate need,” including funding bodies FACTOR and Musicaction, as well as the Indigenous Music Office. – READ MORE


TikTok’s Merlin deal to end on October 31, as indie agency accuses app of not wanting ‘to pay a fair rate for the music that powers their platform’.
Merlin, whose membership includes prominent independent companies such as Because Music, Downtown Music, Mushroom Music, Reservoir Media and more, says that TikTok “walked away before negotiations even began” and with “no warning”. – READ MORE
