Music BC’s Annual General Meeting is in just under two weeks! This year’s AGM will be held virtually on Wednesday, October 23rd, 2024 at 5:00 PM (PST).
During the meeting, Music BC Members will have the opportunity to help shape the Board of Directors, as well as learn about our organization’s vision for 2025 and beyond.

Interested in running for a seat on the Board of Directors? Our deadline for expressions of interest is tomorrow, October 11th, 2024. Please reach out to emily@musicbc.org for more information, and to express your intent to run.
To be eligible for consideration, a candidate must meet the following qualifications:
Be a Music BC member in good standing
Be 19 years of age or older
Believe in the mission, vision and work of the Organization
Attend 4-6 board meetings per year (currently held digitally), approx. 6-9hrs/year
Participate in at least one sub-committee (2-3 virtual meetings per year), approx. 2-3hrs/year
Must be available by phone and email
Support ongoing Music BC events in person whenever possible
Attend the 2024, 2025 and 2026 AGM, if possible, approx. 1.5-2hrs/year
Our board is currently made up of eleven directors which are all volunteered positions. This year there are six (6) seats to be filled (each seat is a two-year term).

Canada House showcases will be hosted on site, providing business opportunities for participating Canadian artists and companies. HER MUSIC AWARDS SOCAN Foundation’s “Her Music Awards”, presented by Anthem Entertainment, are designed to celebrate and support female-identified Canadian mid-career music creators who are on the verge of taking their creative careers to the next level. All genres of music are welcome. Eligible applications will be considered by a jury of prominent Canadian music creators. Excellence demonstrated through Artistic Merit will be an overriding consideration in the adjudication, in addition to thoughtful demonstration of how the Award would help advance the applicant’s career. WOMEN IN MUSIC CANADA: LEADERSHIP ACCELERATOR Presented with liaison partners ADVANCE Canada’s Black Music Industry Collective, the International Indigenous Music Summit, and ArtHaus, this program prepares women and gender-diverse professionals for executive leadership roles. This program is intended for mid-level industry professionals, in existing music companies or entrepreneurs, with a primary goal of preparing women and gender diverse music professionals for advancement to senior management and director-level opportunities. Spotify Raising Prices in Canada While Challenging Proposed ‘Streaming Tax’ The Online Streaming Act was implemented this year after extensive consultations last fall. The base contributions from major streamers are expected to generate 200 million in funds for Canadian content, with the contributions directed toward “areas of immediate need,” including funding bodies FACTOR and Musicaction, as well as the Indigenous Music Office. – READ MORE
TikTok’s Merlin deal to end on October 31, as indie agency accuses app of not wanting ‘to pay a fair rate for the music that powers their platform’. Merlin, whose membership includes prominent independent companies such as Because Music, Downtown Music, Mushroom Music, Reservoir Media and more, says that TikTok “walked away before negotiations even began” and with “no warning”. – READ MORE
