New Podcast, Amplify, Takes A Stand For Black Representation In Canadian Entertainment
We have always dealt with being in the shadow of America’s cultural footprint, driving many Black Canadians to get involved in media, fashion, and music to be the change we want to see. In the spirit of seeing Black representation in the media and entertainment industry, the non-profit group ADVANCE, Canada’s Black Music Business Collective, was formed to do just that by creating the conditions for advancement. It aims to address racial equality and inclusivity through advocacy, mentorship, and community outreach. And one of the ways they’re furthering this goal is through their recently launched weekly podcast AMPLIFY, narrated by award-winning writer, actress, radio host, and media personality, Jemeni. – READ MORE

With ‘Devastating’ Costs and COVID Risks, Many Musicians Can’t Make Touring Work
This past spring, as the omicron wave subsided and the world began a ready-or-not return to something resembling normal, the floodgates opened and thousands of musicians returned to the road. Audiences flocked to arenas and big theaters see Harry Styles, Olivia Rodrigo, Elton John and many others. Coachella launched the festival season with a bang, and smaller clubs began to cautiously figure out how to put on shows in tight spaces. It was a bumpy start — many acts (even Sir Elton and Bon Jovi) had to cancel or postpone shows because of positive Covid tests — but a start, nonetheless. Live Nation CEO Michael Rapino says ticket sales are on their way to a record year. – READ MORE
It’s Happened: 100,000 Tracks Are Now Being Uploaded To Streaming Services Like Spotify Each Day
It was inevitable, but it’s no less eye-popping: approximately 100,000 fresh tracks are now being uploaded to music streaming platforms every day. That’s according to two of the most influential figures in the modern music business: Universal Music Group CEO and Chairman, Sir Lucian Grainge, plus the outgoing CEO of Warner Music Group, Steve Cooper. Addressing the Music Matters conference in Singapore on September 27, Grainge said that 100,000 tracks were now being “added to music platforms every day.” He argued that this vast volume of music, plus additional “associated content” on social platforms, is making it increasingly difficult for artists to break through to a substantial audience online.  – READ MORE

‘SoundCloud for Artists’ Platform Officially Debuts
SoundCloud has officially launched “SoundCloud for Artists” (formerly Repost), and execs are billing the offering as “an elevated, all-in-one platform for artists to connect with fans and accelerate their careers.” The music-sharing service acquired rights management and distribution company Repost Network in 2019, and as noted, this subsidiary has been folded over into the newly minted SoundCloud for Artists. SoundCloud for Artists, for its part, is expected to serve as creators’ “centralized home for all things distribution, promotion, monetization, and more,” according to the namesake service, which earlier this month finalized a partnership with Björn Ulvaeus-founded credits and collaboration platform Session. – READ MORE

SPOTLIGHT OF THE WEEK

Riun Garner is a Canadian singer-songwriter from Vancouver, BC. His debut EP “All We Know and All We Forget” which has been featured on Spotify editorial playlists including “The Most Beautiful Songs in the World” introduced him to listeners everywhere and achieved him notoriety among industry professionals. Fondly compared to the likes of Elliott Smith, Riun’s influences draw from the formative alternative indie-rock music of his youth growing up in the late 90s with the fresh perspective of modern contemporaries such as Whitney, Hovvdy, and Phoebe Bridgers.

As a two time winner of the Canadian Songwriters Challenge, Riun Garner has been expanding his scope and talent as a singer-songwriter and artistic craftsman. Though deeply personal, Riun’s songs seem almost written for you or about you. They embody that which we can’t always comprehend: the irreconcilable joy and loss of loving. And there’s a truthful emotionality and earnestness that invites you to reflect on our own lives. His new music marks a significant shift in production and musical accompaniment while still leaning into the fluttering analog tape recorded elements that bridge the nostalgic upbringings of his EP and makes it akin to a gifted mix tape from friend or lover full of timeless classics.
