INDUSTRY NEWS

Desirée Dawson announced as FOTR’s artist-in-residence
Desirée Dawson, a BC-based singer and songwriter, has been selected as the visiting artist for Folk on the Rocks’ new artist-in-residency program. She will spend November living in Yellowknife and participating in weekly performances, collaborating with local artists, and hosting music industry workshops. Dawson says she started playing music 10 years ago when she discovered its power to bring people together. Her career started with her guiding yoga and meditation and infusing the two with music. “Once I started seeing how powerful that was, that’s what introduced me into actually performing on stage and following more of a songwriting path,” Dawson told Cabin Radio. “I know that everybody probably writes from the heart, but my music is just heartfelt with some slow meditative albums, with also more upbeat pop songs, and really I just want to be a healing experience for other people. – READ MORE

Netflix Music Supervisors File For Union Election

A number of music supervisors who are currently working with or have recently worked with the streamer on a project-by-project basis are seeking to be represented in collective bargaining by IATSE, the major crew union that represents music editors, camera crews, script supervisors and other crafts. (No in-house workers are included in the current effort.) According to IATSE, “an overwhelming majority” of music supervisors recently and now affiliated with the company asked the company for voluntary recognition, which Netflix rebuffed, so the group is now seeking to join IATSE through the NLRB process. – READ MORE

Musicians like me can no longer afford to tour. Live music won’t survive unless the industry changes
“I’ve done more than a dozen tours, and hitting the road has always been a financially risky endeavour. A three-week journey can cost anywhere between $60,000 and $100,000. The expenses behind the average tour—which can include a tour manager, travel, work visas, backing musicians, and lighting and sound technicians—are mostly paid out of pocket by artists. The travel is excruciating, and the margins are incredibly thin. Bands don’t get in the van because they think they’re going to get rich; most of us hope to simply break even and gain a few new fans along the way.” – READ MORE

SPOTLIGHT OF THE WEEK

Ruby Singh is a multi award winning composer and producer residing on the unceded territories of the xwməθkwəy̓ əm, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, and səl̓ílwətaʔɬ/Selilwitulh Nations (Vancouver BC.). His creativity crosses the boundaries of music, poetry, photography and film engaging with mythos, memory, justice and fantasy. Singh is an artist whose work is informed by sound found all around us, from the whirling planets and stars of distant galaxies to percussion of an umbrella under coastal rains, to the perpetual moving birdsong of the dawn chorus, constantly circling the globe.

The richly imaginative visual textures to his sound design have found kinship in the theatre, film and dance worlds, where he has been celebrated by multiple Jessie and Leo award nominations. His distinct approach uses traditional and emergent sonic practices to create compositions that express the vast spectrum of the human experience. Singh’s artistic impulses gravitate in many directions, in 2022 he received the Lieutenant Governor’s Jubilee Award for excellence in art and music.

His previous works range from ambient audio-visual worlds of the Polyphonic Garden to Jhalaak, a Sufi hip hop album made alongside Manganiyar musicians recorded in the clay huts of the Thar desert in Rajasthan India, reinterpreting 13th century Sufi poetry. His most recent offerings include: Vox.infold, an a cappella project bringing together the sounds of Inuit, Indigenous, Black and South Asian voices, has been met with critical acclaim and The Future Ancestors a blues and soul infused live hip hop project. Singh believes in art’s ability to reimagine futures, to repurpose aesthetic freedoms toward civil and environmental justice.
