INDUSTRY NEWS

Dan Mangan’s Side Door Startup Gets $500K Offer on ‘Dragons’ Den’
Armed with an acoustic guitar and a dream, Vancouver scene mainstay Dan Mangan bravely ventured forth into the belly of the beast Dragons’ Den alongside business partner Laura Simpson. They brought their DIY touring company Side Door to the entrepreneurial reality show’s dungeons, having co-founded the startup in 2017 and it having become an epicentre for lockdown-era livestream concerts in 2020. Mangan and Simpson’s pitch was likewise a great success, with Dragon Arlene Dickinson offering them $500,000 in a convertible note. Mangan shared the news on TikTok, in a video that sees him both watching the offer happen on the episode in real-time and also giving a quick explainer about Side Door before revealing that — drumroll, please — he and Simpson agreed to make a deal with Dickinson.- READ MORE
Early Onset Records pushes local punk to new places
Vancouver has had a healthy punk rock scene since the late 1970s. That doesn’t mean that there aren’t a lot of challenges facing artists working in the genre. One of the biggest is earning enough to record music to be heard outside the insular local scene. Now a new Vancouver label has hit upon a unique way of giving artists a leg-up through a patron-based batch series of releases paid in advance. The Early Onset Records Artist Preservation Society, commonly referred to as Early Onset Records or EOR, is a non-profit, volunteer run group formed by a core of five punk fans and players who want their local scene celebrated. Through a patron-based model where cash is collected on the front end to finance the production process, fans can get five new releases from local bands carefully curated by the team.  – READ MORE

Over 44M People Attended Live Nation Concerts In Q3 2022 – Its Highest Quarterly Attendance Ever
Concerts giant Live Nation just delivered what it says was the “biggest summer concert season in history”. According to new investor filings, the company generated Q3 revenues of $6.15 Billion in the three months to end of September, up 63% YoY. Those revenues were generated across all divisions, including concerts, ticketing and advertising & sponsorship. Live Nation delivered these results, according to President and CEO Michael Rapino, writing to investors this week, “despite varying economic headwinds including inflation”. He added: “Fans around the world continue prioritizing their spend on live events, particularly concerts.” – READ MORE

Pressure mounts on TikTok over its music royalties payments
There has been a steady increase in the chorus of grumbling from music rightsholders about how TikTok pays royalties for music used on its platform – and how much it pays. Now those complaints are being accompanied by the receipts. Billboard’s latest feature on TikTok offers some figures that are calculated to startle. One track that was used in around 500k TikTok videos which collectively generated billions of views “took home less than $5,000 from the platform” for example. Another independent label shared figures with Billboard showing royalties of $8 from 1m views on TikTok: “actually a better rate than the one exhibited on three other indie labels’ most recent statements that were shared with Billboard,” as the publication noted. – READ MORE
Jury Awards Major Labels $46.8 Million In Grande Communications Copyright Infringement Verdict
An Austin federal jury has found Grande Communications liable for willful infringement of 1,403 copyrighted sound recordings. The Texas-based internet provider must pay $46,766,200 in damages to a group of prominent record label plaintiffs represented by the RIAA (which includes Sony Music Entertainment, Universal Music Group, and Warner Music Group, among others.) The jury found that Grande Communications failed to meet its federal legal obligations regarding online piracy on its network and therefore was liable for willful infringement. – READ MORE
Musicians reconsider value of touring as competition soars, prices surge
Concertgoers are rushing back to shows and more musicians are on the road than venues can schedule. At first glance, it might seem like the live music scene is booming for everyone. “That’s not the case,” says music manager Sheri Jones. “It’s much harder to sell tickets.” With almost three years of postponed shows backed up and many musicians promoting pandemic-era albums, Jones says the market is flooded with “a ton of options” for ticket buyer. But industry players say the world’s biggest touring names are cannibalizing ticket sales for everyone else, particularly artists without the promotional heft of a major label and sponsorship deals. – READ MORE
What Can the Music Industry Do About Gun Violence in the Black Community?
A famous rapper is gunned down, the music industry mourns, makes a few statements, and then returns to business as usual, promoting content that glorifies Black murder and trauma.  How could anyone believe that these images and lyrics don’t impact the already traumatized psyche of Black America, and perpetuate harmful stereotypes about Black people? I recently posted a clip from Pastor Michael T. Smith’s TEDx Talk on my Instagram, where he speaks on how Black murder is a marketing strategy. Could the music industry prove him wrong? Unfortunately, right now, the answer is no. He says, “It doesn’t take action to keep racism going. It takes inaction.” – READ MORE
Artists, Industry Leaders, Legal Experts Join Together to ‘Protect Black Art’
The open letter was published in The New York Times and The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and urges legislators across the United States to limit how creative expression can be used against defendants on trial. The open letter specifically addresses the use of treating rap lyrics as criminal confessions. The lengthy list of diverse signatories includes the Big Three (Warner, Sony, Universal) as well as BMG, Kobalt, Atlanta-based LVRN and Quality Control, AEG Presents, Audiomack, Deezer, Live Nation Entertainment, SiriusXM, SoundCloud, Spotify, TIDAL, TikTok, and YouTube Music, among many other industry bodies and associations. – READ MORE

SPOTLIGHT OF THE WEEK

Vox Rea supplies a soundtrack to the confusion and euphoria of coming of age in a postmodern world. With a sound as impulsive and fluctuating as the life of the 20-somethings they are, their special brand of noir pop blends string arrangements and harmonies into the dreamy collection of songs on their self-titled debut.

Citing influences that range from Florence and the Machine to Friedrich Nietzsche, the band draws inspiration from a mix of nostalgia for times past and life in a modern day world in turmoil. Fascinated by the contradictions inherent in the human experience, their music is a celebration of free will and an ode to the paralyzing nature of choice. It is both the intoxicating night roaming and the guilty morning after, a revelry in excess and an exercise in solemn self-reflection. Vox Rea chronicles the odyssey of a group of  artists trying to come to terms with their generation’s place in the human story. Themes of addiction, self-doubt, lust, identity, independence and grief form the undercurrent of lyrics that are deeply introspective. Hell bent on creating a meaningful life amidst the siren songs of consumerism and efficiency, Vox Rea wonders what it really means to be free.
