This summer a new program will kick-off in order to help advance the business, creative, and technical skills of BC recording artists! Introducing ARC – an intensive program that will incorporate a series of artist development experiences and feature some incredible names from the music industry as producers, mentors and creative faculty members.

Ready to take the leap? Applications are now open for BC-based artists – make sure to review the Guidelines and Eligibility before embarking on your application.

TRAVEL GRANT APPLICATIONS OPEN

Music BC Artist and Business Travel applications are once again open for submission. The deadline for this intake will be June 10th, 2022 at 5:00PM (PDT). For each deadline always make sure to review the Guidelines and Eligibility as we do make adjustments throughout the year based on feedback from our applicants and members.

As well, we are now in the process of notifying the applicants from our second deadline (March 18th, 2022) on the status of their application, we thank everyone for their patience.

CANADA HOUSE IS BACK AT THE GREAT ESCAPE

As the UK’s premier new music and industry gathering, The Great Escape Festival is where music industry representatives from around the world come to network, make deals and discover new and emerging talent. Participating BC artists in this year’s showcase include JESSIA, Mauvey and Art d’Ecco.

Canada House will once again showcase the country’s hottest rising independent artists to music fans and industry over three days (May 12, 13 & 14) at the Green Door Store. Participating this year are 18 artists from Alberta, Quebec, Manitoba, British Columbia, Ontario, Nova Scotia and Saskatchewan.

GRANTS FOR UNDERREPRESENTED GROUPS

Today, Creative BC launches three programs funding Indigenous and underrepresented artists and organizations: the Demo Recording, Music Video, and Industry Catalyst programs. Previously supporting artists and industry living and working in Vancouver, the Province of British Columbia has matched funding provided by the City of Vancouver to extend these programs across B.C.

MUSIC BC ARTIST APPLICATIONS: VANCOUVER MURAL FESTIVAL 2022
Music BC is thrilled to be partnering with Vancouver Mural Festival this August for a night of live music featuring emerging BC artists! Applications are now open to perform with Music BC during this summer’s event, returning from August 4th to 14th. Applications close Sunday, May 8th at midnight (PDT).

INDIGENOUS MUSIC INCUBATOR
OHSOTO’KINO Indigenous Music Incubator is a five-day intensive artist development program for emerging Indigenous artists in Canada. Each year, four to six Indigenous artists will converge at Studio Bell, home of the National Music Centre, to learn new skills, connect with music industry experts from across the country, and hone their craft and professional chops. The application period closes at midnight on April 28, 2022

REEPERBAHN ARTIST APPLICATIONS
The Reeperbahn Festival returns to Hamburg, DE from September 21st – 24th, 2022. Music BC will once again be hosting BC artists at Canada House alongside our partners across the country. Artists interested in showcasing are encouraged to apply as soon as possible (Recommended by June 1st, 2022). The deadline to apply is July 23rd, 2022.

Artists wishing to apply for the Official Selection of this 17th edition can answer to the call for applications, presented by la Caisse Desjardins de la Culture, from today until midnight on June 6. To submit your project, you need to fill the form available below. Please note that an administrative fee of 45$ CAD is required for each artist application.

Spotify Is Finally Building A Tips Economy For Artists
For the past couple of years, the music industry has been watching the emerging tips economies on platforms like Twitch and YouTube, and wondering how (or if) they might be applied to the music streaming ecosystem. Meanwhile, a number of artists have been diving into those other platforms’ tips economies to make money. Twitch even commissioned a ‘Rockonomics’ study to encourage more of that. READ MORE
Abbotsford-Based Predominant Studios Making Waves In 2022
CEO Jacqueline Best said the successful formula is simple – be artist friendly. “The one thing that makes Predominant popular amongst all the artists is that we take a really low cut versus the major labels,” she said. “We actually don’t make a lot of money on the royalties from songs – we make our money in sales like merchandise, concert tickets, touring or getting our artists other opportunities.” READ MORE
Intercept Music Partners With Method Man To Launch Global Platform
Intercept Music is launching a new campaign entitled ‘Independence Empowered’ to highlight the partnership. “Hard work beats talent, when talent fails to work hard,” Method Man adds. “Proper education leads to constant elevation. Intercept equals empowerment.” Intercept Music gives artists and their labels immediate access to hundreds of digital stores and every major streaming platform. Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, Pandora, and YouTube Music distribution are all included. READ MORE
Face The Music Now Foundation Launched To Help Sexual Abuse Survivors In The Music Industry
Face The Music Now was founded by author Dorothy Carvello, who was also the first female A&R executive at Atlantic Records, and according to the site it aims to “highlight the reality of what has been going on for decades, demand accountability and change, and pave the way for survivors to tell their stories and reclaim their lives.”  READ MORE

SoundMint offers a platform that reimagines the process of creating a new form of art and music. The startup is a new medium of music creation, bringing innovation to the way people interpret music collectibles in Web3, where the majority of the sale goes to the artist. Latin music is on course to generate over $1 billion in the US in 2022 
This annual revenue figure will now only have to rise by a further 12.9% (+$114m) in 2022 to hit the magic billion-dollar mark. Considering that Latin music’s US revenues rose by 19.6% YoY in 2020 and by 28.5% YoY in 2019, the smart money’s on the category finally bursting through the billion-dollar threshold in 2022. – READ MORE

The company has already attracted some of the top artists, music executives and technology veterans, thanks to its disruptive technology offering that enables anyone to create incredible music quickly, challenging slower-paced lower-quality music industry and creator economy incumbents. More than $3.8 million has been invested in the company’s over-subscribed seed round by a wide range of investors, including leaders from businesses such as Microsoft, The Walt Disney Company, Accenture, Beatport and Squeak E Clean Studios. – READ MORE
Universal Music Group Partners With The Mental Health Coalition To Deliver Climate Change Mental Health Roadmap
Dr Naomi Torres-Mackie, clinical psychologist and head of research for the Mental Health Coalition, said: “We don’t talk about it often enough, but climate change impacts our mental health in a major way. The fears it can bring up, though, can be managed with purposeful action. We are so glad to share this Roadmap, which is a jargon-free tool for doing just that. MEMBER OF THE WEEK



Argel MDR is a Filipino-Canadian singer, songwriter, and actor from Surrey, Canada. He was one of the Top 10 finalists of CBC’s Toyota Searchlight 2021. When he was 15 years old, he moved to Canada from the Philippines with his family to seek a better life and opportunities. As a young immigrant, Argel wants to use the power of storytelling to inspire Filipino youth and other immigrants through his music and theatrical performances. In addition, he is an advocate of representation, anti-racism work, and inclusion. Argel recently received a Pop Artist of the Year Nomination and an Excellence Award by a BIPOC artist from Fraser Valley Music Awards 2021 by CIVL radio 101.7 FM.
