ARC APPLICATIONS CLOSE MAY 15TH

The deadline for applications to ARC is fast approaching. BC artists who qualify will need to provide a short pitch video or written essay, their creative resume, samples of their original music among other details. Our staff are here to help in the process! Please don’t hesitate to reach out hello@arcprogrambc.com with any questions on the program application or if we can offer any guidance in the process!

Ready to take the leap? Applications are now open for BC-based artists – make sure to review the Guidelines and Eligibility before embarking on your application.

TRAVEL GRANTS NOW OPEN

Music BC Artist and Business Travel applications are once again open for submission. The deadline for this intake will be June 10th, 2022 at 5:00PM (PDT). For each deadline always make sure to review the Guidelines and Eligibility as we do make adjustments throughout the year based on feedback from our applicants and members.

MUSIC FESTIVAL FUND DEADLINE APPROACHING

FACTOR’S Music Festival Reopening Fund application is fast approaching (May 6th, 2022). The program is designed to provide assistance to professional music festivals to stimulate their economic recovery by supporting the presentation of their events and encouraging the return of in-person audiences

Applications are assessed taking into account the quality of the project and its potential to re-engage live audiences, as well as the impact it may have on the artist’s career, the employment of technicians and other cultural workers, and service providers.

Applications close May 6th at 5:00PM EDT (2:00PM Pacific Time).

LAST CHANCE FOR MUSIC BC ARTIST APPLICATIONS: VMF 2022
Music BC is thrilled to be partnering with Vancouver Mural Festival this August for a night of live music featuring emerging BC artists! Applications are now open to perform with Music BC during this summer’s event, returning from August 4th to 14th. Applications close Sunday, May 8th at midnight (PDT).

GRANTS FOR UNDERREPRESENTED GROUPS
Creative BC has launched three programs funding Indigenous and underrepresented artists and organizations: the Demo Recording, Music Video, and Industry Catalyst programs. Previously supporting artists and industry living and working in Vancouver, the Province of British Columbia has matched funding provided by the City of Vancouver to extend these programs across B.C.

HONEYJAM AUDITIONS
The folks at HoneyJam are searching the country for female artists, ages 14-25, representing pop, hip hop, jazz, soca, r&b, gospel, rock, dancehall, blues, alternative, opera, country – all styles of music to participate in this season’s artist development programme.All artists planning to attend the Toronto in person auditions as well as artists from other provinces across the country who can’t make the live auditions, please fill out this online submission form.

REEPERBAHN ARTIST APPLICATIONS
The Reeperbahn Festival returns to Hamburg, DE from September 21st – 24th, 2022. Music BC will once again be hosting BC artists at Canada House alongside our partners across the country. Artists interested in showcasing are encouraged to apply as soon as possible (Recommended by June 1st, 2022). The deadline to apply is July 23rd, 2022.

Artists wishing to apply for the Official Selection of this 17th edition can answer to the call for applications, presented by la Caisse Desjardins de la Culture, from today until midnight on June 6. To submit your project, you need to fill the form available below. Please note that an administrative fee of 45$ CAD is required for each artist application.

SoundCloud Marks One Year Of User-Centric Royalties With Fan-Powered Friday
The streaming platform became the first to embrace user-centric payments when it launched its Fan-Powered Royalties system in 2021. Deezer has also experimented with the model.During today’s one-year anniversary, SoundCloud will double the payout by matching 100% of the revenue earned on April 29. Fan-Powered Royalties launched at a point when the industry was busy debating the economics of streaming during the DCMS Committee inquiry.

The Return Of Live Events Pushed The Industry’s Valuation To $6 Billion Last Year, Versus $3.4 Billion In 2020
After losing 54 percent of its value in 2020, the industry grew 71 percent in 2021 to reach a valuation of $6 billion. While that number is well above the $3.4 billion valuation in 2020, it still falls short of 2019’s level of $7.3 billion. Overall, IMS expects the pace of growth to continue, noting the possibility for the industry to eventually surpasses its 2019 figure. The combined value of live events increased 166 percent last year to a total worth of $2.5 billion after declining $3.4 billion in value the previous year.  READ MORE

And, with the editorial deck seemingly stacked in favor of major-backed artists, the indies questioned the fairness of the editorial system, wondering what the editorial game is really about: music or partnerships, scale, and power?  READ MORE
Splice Launches AI-Powered Music Creation Platform As AI Music Continues To Find Its Place
Music-making platform Splice – which says it has paid out tens of millions of dollars to creators – has launched a new AI music creation platform that helps further flesh out our ideas of how human-AI creative partnerships will work. It’s in the form of an easy-to-use sampler/synth app called “CoSo”, meaning “complimentary sounds”.  READ MORE

After Tik Tok & Soundcloud, Tencent Music Is A Distributor Now Too
TME’s new service, dubbed “One-Click For All”, enables independent musicians registered to its Tencent Musician Platform to distribute their music to over 150 platforms globally, including Spotify, YouTube, Apple Music and others. The Tencent Musician Platform is an indie artist initiative previously known as ‘Tencent Musician Program’. It was launched in 2017, and by the end of 2021, the number of registered musicians on the program reached more than 300,000.  – READ MORE

SoundCloud Acquires Musiio, An AI Music Curator, To Improve Discovery
Based in Singapore and founded in 2018, Musiio built an AI that can “listen” to music faster than any human possibly could, tag the audio and curate playlists. The technology helps predict which songs a listener would want to hear next, and if users spend more time on SoundCloud, then the company ultimately profits. SoundCloud president Eliah Seton thinks that the capability of Musiio’s AI will yield especially interesting results on a platform like SoundCloud, where anyone can upload music regardless of whether they’re signed to a label or have a distributor.

Discogs To Boost Brick-and-Mortar Record Stores With New Initiative
The online physical music database announced Tuesday (May 3) that it’s set to launch its first annual Independent Record Store Month in June 2022. By connecting music fans and indie record stores across the globe, the initiative hopes to highlight the importance of physical record shops and their contribution to vinyl culture. During Independent Record Store Month, Discogs will launch The Store Explorer, a new, year-round online directory highlighting brick-and-mortar record shops around the world and encouraging fans to support them. – READ MORE
Hit Songs Deconstructed and MyPart Partner to Launch ChartCipher, Providing Deep Analysis of Decades of Charting Songs
Hit Songs Deconstructed, which analyzes pop songs more deeply than anyone we’ve ever witnessed, and the AI song search and analysis platform MyPart have partnered to launch ChartCipher, a platform that takes both companies’ analysis to new levels. The service is launching in beta in the coming weeks, and the companieswill be delivering their inaugural presentation at Music Biz 2022 in Nashville on May 11th at 12:30 PM. – READ MORE

Josh + Bex are a Canadiana Dream Folk duo from the Okanagan Valley of BC. Their spellbinding harmonies and honed yet rustic sound, meet at the intersection of hope and sorrow – giving space to let their songs explore light, love, pain, connection and natural wonders of Mother Earth. Close your eyes and think Tim Burton meets Fleetwood Mac—creating a haunting, yet soothing and familiar dreamscape.

The duo have performed at the internationally acclaimed Salmon Arm Roots and Blues Festival. In 2021, Josh + Bex won silver in Best of Kelowna Musician (Kelowna Now), giving them wide recognition throughout the Okanagan Valley and beyond.

Josh + Bex released their self-titled EP in October 2019 and have a follow up sophomore record, Everything is Everything, set to be released May 20th, 2022.
