INDUSTRY NEWS

Is Tiktok Slowly Morphing Into A Record Company?
TikTok’s global head of music Ole Obermann told us that, “through SoundOn we’re going to organise the ecosystem of unsigned artists in a way that doesn’t exist today and has never existed before”. He added: “I think that’s going to make it easier for artists to find their fans. And then for labels and publishers to find those artists. The [industry’s] entire A&R process, I think, will become more efficient off the back of it.”  READ MORE
DistroKid Beta Tests A Music Video Distribution Service
Music distributor DistroKid has a new off-shoot: DistroVid. As the name suggests, it’s focusing on music videos rather than audio tracks. The company hopes artists will pay $129 a year to distribute as many music videos as they like to platforms including Apple Music, Vevo, Amazon Music and Tidal, while keeping 100% of the earnings. DistroKid says that DistroVid is a beta test, encouraging artists to “try it & let us know what works and what doesn’t”.

Honey Jam Auditions for 2022 Artist Development Programme
Honey Jam is, first and foremost, a “forever sisterhood,” according to founder Ebonnie Rowe. The programme seeks to empower and support women aged 14 to 25 in the music industry across all genres and styles — and having helped launch the careers of the likes of Nelly Furtado and Melanie Fiona, they have a stellar track record of facilitating a safe space for young women in music to learn and build lasting relationships.  READ MORE

Soundexchange, VEVA Partner For More Accurate Payments To Performers
It’s encouraging to see the power of data to transform payments to artists shift from discussion to reality. SoundExchange is no stranger to smart uses of data, but a new deal with VEVA Sound takes them to another level. The data partnership anounced today is designed to increase the accuracy and efficiency of royalty payments collected by SoundExchange by leveraging audio file-sharing, creator credits, and metadata collected by VEVA Sound. – READ MORE
Record Labels & Publishers Ink Major Settlement, Moving From 9.1 Cents To 12 Cents Per Track For US Mechanical Royalties On Physical Sales
Some wider context to this story, is that in the US, mechanical royalties are paid on to publishers and songwriters by the record companies. Which means that, if the CRB does decide to increase the mechanical rate by 32%, from 9 cents to 12 cents, for physical formats, then the record companies will have to pay this extra money out to songwriters. This becomes a bit of a legal conundrum, when you consider that the three largest music publishers are owned by the same parent companies that own the three largest recorded music companies. – READ MORE
‘Be The Change’ Report Reiterates Challenges For Women In The Music Industry
Midia Research teamed up with TuneCore and Believe this year for a second ‘Be The Change’ report exploring the challenges faced by women in the music industry. The topline finding: “A sobering picture emerges of lack of real change since 2021, and little progress with the challenges that women face,” according to Midia. There are bright spots: 40% of women surveyed for the study said that the visibility of women at music events and conferences has improved since 2021, for example, while 36% saw progress in the diversity of women in executive roles and positions of power. – READ MORE
