‘I sang the facts,’ says Jully Black about 1-word change to O Canada at NBA All-Star game She sang ‘O Canada! Our home on native land,’ with emphasis on the word ‘on’. Jully Black says the subtle change she made to the lyrics of O Canada at Sunday’s NBA All-Star game was the result of a long reflection. “I sang the facts. We are walking, breathing, living, experiencing life on native land. On Indigenous land,” the Juno award-winning R&B singer told The National on Monday. – READ MORE
Finally making the music she’s always dreamed of, Ché Aimee Dorval is unapologetic When Ché Aimee Dorval heard “Cowboys” by Portishead, it took her out of her body. It was sometime in her early 20s and a DJ she was dating played it for her. She loved trip-hop already—the experimental hip-hop and electronic fusion that emerged from the ’90s Bristol underground—and bands like Zero 7 and Massive Attack had been on constant rotation. – READ MORE
Jayda G is lighting up London’s dancefloors. The Canadian DJ, producer and environmentalist – also known as Jayda Guy – boogied on to the club scene around seven years ago. By 2019, she was on her way to becoming one of the most in-demand underground dance DJs on the planet, thanks to her irresistible blend of classic house, soulful vocals and contemporary disco. Since then, she’s held a club residency at Phonox in Bixton as well as a year-long slot on BBC radio 1. – READ MORE

Women are being exploited in the social media vacuum, and Black women in particular are being besieged across the internet, television and the real world. – READ MORE

On a February morning in Brixton, old friends Yvonne Taylor and Eddie Lockhart are laughing about their first forays into London’s lesbian nightlife – and how they eventually went on to transform it. In 1984, Taylor moved from Nottingham to London and found the women-only clubs to be “torture”. – READ MORE
NOW just became one of Canada’s only Black-owned publications — but rebuilding will be a struggle As a Toronto adolescent relying on public transit, I remember being enamoured with NOW Magazine, a free alt-weekly focused on local arts, culture, and political news that consumed my commutes. For many Torontonians, NOW was a staple part of the city for more than four decades. But last year, the city’s relationship with the publication was ruptured when it was announced that NOW’s parent company, Media Central Corporation (MCC), was significantly in debt – READ MORE
