The Reeperbahn Festival returns to Hamburg, DE from September 21st – 24th, 2022. Music BC will once again be hosting BC artists at Canada House alongside our partners across the country. Artists interested in showcasing are encouraged to apply as soon as possible as artists will be considered on a first come first serve basis.
The application deadline is July 23rd, 2022 for the festival – but BC artists are highly recommended to apply as soon as they can.
MUSIC BC TRAVEL GRANTS The deadline for our travel grant applications are only a few weeks away for artist or business travel. For each deadline always make sure to review the Guidelines and Eligibility as we do make adjustments throughout the year based on feedback from our applicants and members. The deadline for this intake will be June 10th, 2022 at 5:00PM (PDT).
GRANTS FOR UNDERREPRESENTED GROUPS Creative BC has launched three programs funding Indigenous and underrepresented artists and organizations: the Demo Recording, Music Video, and Industry Catalyst programs. Previously supporting artists and industry living and working in Vancouver, the Province of British Columbia has matched funding provided by the City of Vancouver to extend these programs across B.C.

Live Nation Announces ‘Next Gen’ Program To Help Young People Into The Music Business ”Live Nation Next Gen”, a new career development program focused on helping young people, primarily from Black and Latinx communities, prepare for careers in the live music business. According to the announcement, The inaugural program features an intensive 10-week program of courses for local students ages 16 to 21. Each week the students are guided through a curriculum and learning from a host of industry professionals, volunteer advisory board members, and Live Nation executives. – READ MORE
Troy Carter’s Venice Is Launching An NFT-Gated Members Club, Offering Artist Services, Studios, & More The company has today taken the wraps off a new NFT-gated project called the Venice Music Collective. Amongst the perks on offer for artists accepted into this Collective? Access to a new physical space in Los Angeles called Venice House, which includes recording studios and a pool – and is claimed to offer “the creative spirit of Laurel Canyon into the modern-day era”. Venice says that, since its launch a year-and-a-half ago, it has “curated a group of creative geniuses” that includes over 100 artists, producers, managers, and indie labels. – READ MORE
TikTok Is Rolling Out Its ‘Live Subscription’ Feature The ‘creator economy’ is big business nowadays, which means the big social media firms are falling over one another to offer new ways for their creators to make money. TikTok is the latest to experiment with creator-level subscriptions, which are launching this week on an invite-only basis. The ‘Live Subscription’ will let TikTok users pay monthly subscriptions to individual creators in return for perks including profile badges, custom emotes to use in livestream chats, and access to subscriber-only chats if the creator turns it on.– READ MORE
How NFTs Are Shaping the Way Music Sounds So what flowers might bloom from this unwieldy and already-polarizing new format? An NFT music chart called Top of the Blocks, published weekly since March 2021, offers clues to what’s worked so far. The chart is based on sales volume, and the amounts required to crack the top 10 have soared over the last year, from the equivalent of $200 or $300 to $2,000 or $3,000 prior to cryptocurrency’s recent crash, says founder Robin Spottiswoode. – READ MORE
Sounds Platform Voicy Completes $1.27 Million Pre-Seed Round With Support From Spotify & Deezer Execs The startup currently boasts 1.1 million “active users,” execs disclosed, besides a library of “125,000 unique sounds” that rack up an average of 35 million total plays each month. Universal’s DIY Distributor Introduces A&R Process, Drops A Chunk Of Its Current Artists Spinnup is revamping to become a “fully curated invite-only artist discovery and music distribution platform”, which basically means the music distribution service will only be available to a select group of artists. Current Spinnup users not in that select group will need to find another distributor pronto. According to Hypebot, Spinnup sent an email to its current userbase on Wednesday which announced that it is “changing from an open DIY music distribution service to a curated artist discovery and distribution platform”.– READ MORE
TikTok Has Changed Music — And The Industry Is Hustling To Catch Up TikTok has flipped the script on the music industry, and everyone from artists to analysts and even marketing bosses at the top labels are hustling to catch up. Verdes thinks he would have made it without TikTok, but he also noticed that his fans on the app were especially engaged. They would go from his TikTok to his Spotify page or his YouTube channel. “You just made this video, you have this song, you have this melody that they really like. They want to go get that. You just gave them something,” he said.

Music Web3 Startup Highlight Raises $11M From Backers Including Three Six Zero, WME In a blog post announcing its launch and seed round, Highlight claims to be “the product of hundreds of conversations with mainstream creators, music artists, and brands, many of whom are excited by Web3 but remain at a distance for fear of technical complexity or fan frustration”. The company claims further that, launching a project on its platform, “from deploying your custom smart contract to posting token-gated content or utility”, takes less than five minutes and requires no technical knowledge. – READ MORE

Nathan Turner is a singer-songwriter, guitarist, and producer from the Pacific Northwest. He is an !earshot Top 50 National charting producer and artist with his duo Logan and Nathan. In his various projects Turner has played on stages across Canada, the USA, and the UK, with notable performances at Vancouver Island Music Fest, Canmore Folk Fest, All Folk’d Up, and Cold Snap. Stepping out on his own, his latest EP Nocturne For The Salty Moon adds down-tempo rhythm and Eno-esque ambience to evocative songwriting. The results are stunningly hypnotic with uplifting harmonies, and guitar suspended dreamily over subtle instrumentation.
