February is Black History Month, and we’re celebrating black artists from BC with our first live concert of 2022 (curated by Afro Van Connect). On February 25th we’ll be presenting 3 emerging black artists with special guest host Prado Monroe.
Let’s Hear It! Live is a concert series spotlighting new and emerging talent from diverse communities around BC. ADVANCE ANNOUNCES ADVISORY COMMITTEE IN BRITISH COLUMBIA
Our very own Community Engagement Coordinator – Kentya Kurban – was recently announced as the Chairperson of the British Columbia Advisory Committee for ADVANCE. Music BC, Creative BC and the Province of British Columbia are proud to share the appointment of Kentya to this position, knowing she brings together a vast network of people, with the goal of strengthening the black music business network in British Columbia.

FACTOR Canada’s Envelope Funding for Music Companies applications are open! The program is allocated once a year for a recipient to undertake an array of activities fostering the development of Canadian artists and the promotion of their music. This can include expenses related to the production and marketing of sound recordings, domestic and international tours and showcases, music publishing, artist management and business development activities. The deadline to apply is Thursday, February 10th, 2022 at 2pm (PST).

Sony Music Publishing Launches Global ‘Songwriter Assistance’ Wellness Program Starting February 1, Songwriter Assistance will offer 24/7 counseling support via global hotlines, as well as ongoing counseling services for emotional health matters such as stress, anxiety, depression, and family/relationship challenges. The new initiative follows the launch of Sony Music Entertainment‘s own wellness-focused program called Artist Assistance, in September. –READ MORE
Online streaming act covers streaming giants, promotes Canadian content The Liberal government has revived a bill subjecting streaming companies, such as Netflix, to the same rules as traditional Canadian broadcasters.The Online Streaming Act, introduced Wednesday, would force web firms to offer a set amount of Canadian content and invest heavily in Canada’s cultural industries, including film, television and music.– READ MORE
Recording Academy Strikes Partnership With GLAAD to Foster LGBTQ+ Inclusion in Music Community The Recording Academy has donated $150,000 and struck a partnership with GLAAD — the world’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) media advocacy organization — to support its work to diversify the music industry and champion musicians in the LGBTQ+ community, the organization announced Tuesday. – READ MORE
Spotify Launches ‘Made to be Found’ Guide For Artists The Made to be Found website details how music goes from distribution to playlist pitching – through three key pathways. These include editorial curation by Spotify, personalized algorithmic recommendations, and fan-led streaming. Statistics Canada Report On Performing Arts – 2020 In 2020, the performing arts industry was directly affected by federal and provincial government measures put in place to control the spread of COVID-19. From the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in Canada in March 2020, government restrictions led to the cancellation or postponement of shows across all provinces, greatly limiting most business operations. – READ MORE
6 Reasons Why Old Music Is Endangering The Music Of Today And The Future A couple of weeks back, MRC, the company that monitors music consumption, released a report for the U.S. that gave the entire recording industry a bad case of the vapours. Of all the music Americans listen to, stream, and purchase, 70 per cent of it is considered “old” — that is, released more than 18 months ago. That’s 19 per cent higher than just a year ago. Warner Music To Waive Unrecouped Debts For Heritage Artists And Songwriters, Universal To Follow What that means is that eligible artists, songwriters and others who had not recouped their advances and/or other expenses will now receive royalties that previously had gone toward paying down those expenses. That situation has meant that many artists have received low or even no royalty payments as the company applied their earnings to paying down debts they may have incurred through signing advances or other recoupable expenses that standard record-label contracts oblige the artist to cover. – READ MORE
Indie Artists Get A Much-Needed Pandemic Lifeline As Bandcamp Fridays Makes A Return Until At Least May The indie-oriented streaming platform announced today the return of Bandcamp Fridays starting in February. First launched in March 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic exploded into a worldwide thing, the initiative sees Bandcamp waive its normal cut of all purchases so that all sales proceeds go directly to artists. The just-announced reboot will run the first Friday of every month in 2022 until at least May.– READ MORE

SUGARFUNGUS is an indie pop/dream pop band from Vancouver, Canada that was formed remotely in 2020 during the coronavirus pandemic. The band is released their first EP entitled “Letting Go, Moving Still” on January 26, 2022. The EP presents a set of warm and fuzzy tracks that blend bright guitar lines and atmospheric synths, all the while punctuated by pop-driven hooks that capture the feeling of drifting in and out of a state of sweet, mushroomy bliss.
