CELEBRATING WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH

Hot off the heels of our sold-out Black History Month showcase last week, we’re thrilled to announce the 2nd of 4 live concerts as part of the Let’s Hear It! Live series! This march we celebrate Women’s History Month with a special live concert featuring three emerging women in music from BC and special guest host Allie Sheldan (Little Destroyer).

Rifflandia Festival is coming back to Victoria, BC this September after taking a 2 year hiatus. The iconic BC event brings together talent from around BC and across Canada. This year we are proud to be presenting the Canadian artist applications directly through Music BC.

Canadian artists are encouraged to submit their application through the link below. Deadline Sunday, March 20th at 11:59 PM.

The 2022 JUNO Award nominees have been announced and we are so proud to see so many well deserved names from BC on the list – with nearly 30 individual nominations to boot!

LAST CALL: WIDE DAYS EDINBURGH

Music BC is partnering with BreakOut West on a mission to Wide Days showcase festival in Edinburgh, Scotland. We’ll be showcasing artists and building opportunities in the surrounding markets. Applications are open to musicians of all genres making original music, including solo-artists, and bands.

The deadline for submission is coming up quick, don’t miss an opportunity to be considered for this distinctive event in Scotland.

Hey Vancouver musicians! Interested in performing at the largest free street festival in Vancouver? Applications are now open to apply to perform at the Khatsahlano Street Party this July! The deadline to apply is March 18, 2022 at 5pm PST.

Artists are encouraged to submit their application to be considered for the Western Canadian Music Awards or to showcase during the festival. Reminder that early bird pricing for WCMA submissions and showcase submissions end on March 8th, 2022.

In her Music B.C. creative role as community engagement coordinator, Kentya Kurban specializes in networking to develop fertile ecosystems for local creatives to develop and excel in their fields. As the new chair of the regional advisory board of ADVANCE, she will continue deepening those key professional and personal relationships, provide strategies, and address specific needs of Black music professionals in the province. – READ MORE
Live Nation to stop putting on shows in Russia following invasion of Ukraine 
One of the largest live music companies in the world, Live Nation is made up of four companies (Ticketmaster, Live Nation Concerts, Artist Nation Management and Live Nation Media/Sponsorship).  In a statement shared yesterday (March 2), Live Nation wrote that it’s joining “the world in condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and applauds all the musicians who are using their voices to promote peace”.

Amazon Music Now Allows Artists to Add Custom Audio Messages to Their Profiles
Having debuted a payola-free pitching and promotion tool last year, Amazon Music has officially launched Spotlight, which allows artists to equip their profiles with personalized voice messages. Amazon Music for Artists reached out to DMN with details about Spotlight today. The new feature enables artists with 3,000 or more on-platform fans to set the aforementioned personalized voice messages to “any song, album, playlist, or station,” higher-ups explained.

Epic Games Acquires Bandcamp as ‘Fortnite’ Maker Expands Into Music
Video-game developer Epic Games announced that it has bought Bandcamp, the online music store and community geared around independent musicians. Bandcamp will play an “important role in Epic’s vision to build out a creator marketplace ecosystem for content, technology, games, art, music and more,” the games company said. According to Bandcamp, under its revenue model artists receive net an average of 82% of every sale.  – READ MORE

Spotify Playlist Rules Change After Protest Album
Spotify has reportedly confirmed that it will allow super short songs to be formally pitched for inclusion on its official playlists. This follows a recent release from the band The Pocket Gods called ‘1000X30 – Nobody Makes Money Anymore’, which mainly features tracks that are just over 30 seconds long. That album was designed as a protest over the royalty rates paid by the streaming services which, of course, continue to be controversial in parts of the music community – READ MORE
SaveLive Raises $135 Million To Save Small Music Venues Hurt By The Pandemic
When it launched in 2020 as a venture to bail out small music venues crushed by the pandemic, SaveLive claimed it had raised $75 million from investors like its primary backer, Beverly Hills-based investment firm Deep Field Asset Management. Now, it appears the Los Angeles-based startup has raised a lot more dry powder than previously known—having landed a total of $134.5 million from investors, according to an amended regulatory filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Friday. The company secured that funding from nine different investors, it said. READ MORE
Phillips Backyard Concerts Return To Victoria, Star-Studded Lineups Announced
Live music is returning to Phillips Brewing and Malting in downtown Victoria this year, with some impressive headliners scheduled to arrive. The Phillips Backyard concerts will take place over three weekends this spring and summer: May 14 and 15, July 9 and 10, and Aug. 13 and 14. High-profile bands coming to Victoria include Future Islands, The Beaches, Charlotte Day Wilson and more. Canadian bands will also be performing, in what Phillips describes as a mix of “international headliners” and “burgeoning Canadian talent and rising local stars.”  – READ MORE

MEMBER OF THE WEEK



Jessica Le is a singer/songwriter from British Columbia, Canada. Growing up in a musical family, she has always been singing and playing instruments from a young age. Her musical interests took off when her mom put her in piano lessons at 5 years old. As she began to learn all the different ways to play around with chords and melodies, Le discovered her love and passion for song writing. Technical yet introspective, Le uses her background and knowledge in classical piano, forming powerful ballads to portray raw emotion through song. Her newest single titled “Test Run” is out now.
