Anti-Black Racism In The Canadian Music Industry: Vol. 1 Released
“The report should just be seen as a step in the process towards the eradication of anti-Black racism. It is an executive summary. There is more to come,” said author Ian Andre Espinet during the CIMA discussion about Volume 1 on Feb. 28. “This is an ongoing conversation.” The report — co-produced by Espinet and David “Click” Cox after they booked and co-hosted a 10-part web series in 2020 with over 60 Black music professionals called Breaking Down Racial Barriers — is 23-pages, including recommendations. – READ MORE
Ishkōdé Records Is Indigenous-owned, Women-led And Ready To Change The Game
Kish, an Anishinaabekwe musician who is also one-half of Digging Roots with husband Raven Kanatakta, and Rheaume, who is Métis, have worked as independent artists for nearly two decades, and want to create space in the Canadian music industry for emerging Indigenous voices — space that they had to fight for themselves.  “This is our moment to make a contribution. This is our time to be alive, and clear a path for those yet to come — and pick up that work that was done before us.”

Symphonic Launches Women’s Mentorship Program For The Music Industry
We are coming out of a decade in which interest rates have been at historic lows. All investors are looking into new directions to increase their returns. The rise of one asset class has caught a lot of market attention lately. With the advent of streaming, music royalties have a similar payoff structure to bonds. We chose to take a deeper dive into the music industry and explored the opportunities and risks of this alternative asset class. –  READ MORE
Tik Tok Just Launched Its Own Music Distribution Platform, SoundOn
At the time, the platform’s Global Head of Music Ole Obermann told us: “In short, we’re making it easier for [independent artists] to get their music on TikTok, and we’re going to work with them to much better understand how to reach their audiences on TikTok.” He added: “Through SoundOn we’re going to organize the ecosystem of unsigned artists in a way that doesn’t exist today and has never existed before.” – READ MORE
LimeWire Returning As An NFT Marketplace
LimeWire GmbH is expected to launch in May offering NFTs of songs, merchandise, artwork, and experiences like backstage content. In a bid to expand its appeal to a mass audience, Bloomberg says LimeWire will be denominated in U.S. dollars, accept payments in both crypto and fiat, and offer Bitcoin and Ether wallets through a partnership with Wyre Inc.       READ MORE
Amazon Launches Live-Radio App Amp, Featuring ‘Tens of Millions of Licensed Songs,’ And Strikes Deal With Nicki Minaj
Amazon just recently released a beta version of Amp as well as a website for the platform, which is currently issuing sign-up codes in its social-media bios and elsewhere. “The only true equipment you need” to go live with a radio show, higher-ups explained, “is Amp on your iPhone.” (The company doesn’t “have a hard date” for an Android rollout, but this version of the app “is coming.”)  – READ MORE
Women in Music Industry Still Face ‘Prevalent’ Discrimination, Underpayment and Under-Recognition: ‘Women in the Mix’ Study
The study was built upon the baseline results from the 2019 study by Berklee College of Music and Women in Music, titled “Women in the U.S. Music Industry: Obstacles and Opportunities.” More than 1,600 respondents from across the U.S., representing all ages, races and ethnicities participated. Respondents included those working in various capacities in the industry, from behind the scenes to front and center, and at all levels, from entry to executive.  READ MORE
Junos 2022: A More Diverse Nominees List?
There’s always been a criticism of this country’s music industry, and the Junos as their biggest symbol, that we don’t embrace artists until they’re recognized elsewhere first. Those international superstars are still heavily represented at the Junos, with the Weeknd, Justin Bieber and Shawn Mendes still among the top nominated artists (but not Drake, because he is still boycotting after being snubbed when he hosted years ago). The top nominated artist is actually Quebecois pop singer Charlotte Cardin with six, while rising rapper Pressa and TikTok breakout JESSIA also got four each– READ MORE

MEMBER OF THE WEEK

Growing up on a small island north of Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Aspen King always had a passion for electronic music. She’s been so immersed in music for a majority of her life, that she attended her first rave when she was a fetus in her mom’s womb. Growing up, she listened to music by the likes of: Bonobo, Jamie XX, Solomun, Claptone and The Gorillaz.

After moving to a smaller island with her family, where the population is 200 during the summer and drops down to 5 in the winter, she then started producing music with her abundant free time. Aspen studied electronic music production in Vancouver and has applied what she has learned into her productions with her own unique twist. Coming from a techno and house background, over the years she acquired an immense taste in electronic music and carved a sound for herself. Making her debut in 2018, Aspen has gained recognition in the music community performing at events on Vancouver Island. In 2021, she went on to have a debut set with Shambhala as part of their BC showcase, and then shortly after that performed live at their Amp Stage Reunion Event. She’s known for getting a crowd moving with her weird house style beats & deep bass that will keep you bumping all night.
