It’s Official: New Music Is Shrinking In Popularity In The United States
Some will blame a lack of blockbuster records being made during the pandemic. Some will blame a lack of emergent modern superstars. And some (hi Merck!) will blame the fact that young people – as evinced by Kate Bush’s current world-beating popularity – are simply enjoying ‘old’ music as if it were ‘new’ music. But facts is facts: ‘Current’ music in the United States isn’t just losing market share. It’s actually getting statistically less popular. – READ MORE
Can Listening To The Beatles Improve your Memory? New Research Says Music Might Stir The Brain
Published in Nature’s Scientific Reports, Loui found that for older adults who listened to some of their favorite music, including The Beatles, connectivity in the brain increased. Specifically, Loui—and her multi-disciplinary team of music therapists, neurologists and geriatric psychiatrists—discovered that music bridged the gap between the brain’s auditory system and reward system, the area that governs motivation. – READ MORE
Average Ticket Price Jumps By Double Digits From Pre-Pandemic Levels — As Sales Volume Struggles to Rebound
Irving Azoff’s Pollstar disclosed these and an array of other noteworthy stats in its recently published midyear report. Per the resource, North America’s top 100 tours enjoyed an average ticket sale price of $108.20 during Q1 and Q2 2022 – up from $91.86 in H1 2019. Brands Be Warned: TikTok’s UGC Music Licences Don’t Include You
It should be widely known by now, but it bears repeating: when social media companies sign music licensing deals covering user-generated content, those users do NOT include brands. If a brand wants to use commercial music in one of its social media campaigns, it needs to license it properly as a sync. Drinks brand Bang Energy has learned this with a US judge ruling it liable for copyright infringement after using a number of Universal Music Group tracks in its TikTok ads. The company had argued that it thought it was covered by TikTok’s licensing deals with the label group. – READ MORE

Supreme Court Nixes Double Royalties For Streaming Or Downloading Music Online
Songwriters are entitled to just one royalty — not two — when their music is streamed or downloaded through an online service, the Supreme Court of Canada has ruled. The top court’s decision Friday clarifies the meaning of a Canadian copyright law provision dealing with communication of a work to the public online. Canada ushered in the provision after signing on to an international treaty that obliged member countries to protect on-demand transmissions and give authors the right to control when and how their work is made available for downloading or streaming. – READ MORE
World’s “First Plant Based Bioplastic Record” Released By Music Declares Emergency
The “first” plant-based, bioplastic vinyl record is being released by the UK environmental activist organisation Music Declares Emergency (MDE). The vinyl compilation features four tracks from Bicep, Porridge Radio, Angel Olsen and Black Country, New Road – all of whom are Ninja Tune and Secretly-affiliated artists. MDE’s Crowdfunder description claims that Evolution Music created this material to help their mission to “decarbonise the production of physical product in the music business.” READ MORE
How the Universal Language of Music Can Help Us Solve Our Planetary Problem
As the climate changes, it’s not too late to save ourselves. Barring a groundbreaking technological breakthrough, one of the most likely pathways to climate action is via social movements. Activism through nonviolent protest has been found to be successful in achieving its goals if a critical mass of 3.5% or more of the population is mobilized, In other words, if 11.5 million Americans march in the streets and stay engaged, they can help bring about the radical social and political transformation needed to stop climate change.  – READ MORE
