SPOTLIGHT OF THE WEEK
Steph Wall is an alternative/soul singer from Vancouver, B.C. From inner processing and outer revelations, Steph Wall entwines intimate truths with universal struggles, channeling troubles and grief into spirit and joy. Instrumentals align with smooth, sprightly, pensive guitars, pitter-patter drums, dreamy dispatches, and jazz club grooves. Wall delivers sultry emotive vocals similar to the styles of Yebba, Kali Uchis, and Jessica Pratt. Yet she also evokes a laid back attitude inspired by works of Mac Demarco. Over the course of Steph’s decade-long career, she has developed an individualistic quality to her tone which she attributes to her foundations in jazz. Mentored by singers rooted in the jazz tradition has paved the way for Wall’s eclectic sound, plucking inspiration from jazz heroes and pop divas alike.
In her new album, “My Angels” set to be released in full September 15th, Steph explores themes of change, the evolution of friendship, loss, and joy. “This album is all about metamorphosis,”” Steph declares. “”It’s all about coming back to myself and listening to what matters.”
While creating the lyrics was a solitary process, the songs were fleshed out musically with longtime collaborators Allie O’Neill and Noah Franche-Nolan. Exploring the themes mentioned above, these songs are also all about connection. With this being Steph’s first album release since 2019, Wall is excited to share these songs with fans new and old. Steph will be doing a small tour to Vancouver Island post the “My Angels” release and finishing with a Vancouver album release show October 12th alongside opener alt-country singer-songwriter Joe Abbott.
