This funding will reinforce the two-year, $300-million Recovery Fund for the Arts, Culture, Heritage and Sport Sectors and the $200-million Reopening Fund from Budget 2021.– READ MORE
Punjabi singer Diljit Dosanjh selling out Rogers Arena marks a cultural shift in B.C. Diljit Dosanjh made history on June 19 when he became the first Indian artist to perform at the Rogers Arena. The Punjabi singer and actor, who performed in Vancouver for his Born To Shine world tour, also sold out the venue’s nearly 18,000 seats. While Punjabi entertainers have performed in Canada since the 1960s, many feel that Dosanjh’s performance marked a shift for Punjabi music. – READ MORE
Canada Passes Legislation Urging Netflix, Spotify, Facebook to Finance Local Content Canada’s House of Commons has passed Bill C-11, which looks to raise approximately $800 million annually from US and other foreign streaming and social media platforms by subsidizing local Canadian music, film and TV content. Also known as the Broadcasting Modernization Act, Bill C-11 now awaits passage through the Senate in Ottawa. If it becomes law, it will update the federal Broadcasting Act to add an “online company” category and regulate foreign media players that are active in the Canadian market — including Netflix, Spotify, Facebook and more — for the first time.

Soaring gas prices leave touring Canadian musicians in a tough spot When Josh and Katie Pascoe mapped out their multi-province summer concert tour earlier this year they didn’t anticipate just how expensive it would be to fill their van’s gas tank. Most of their energy was focused on securing shows for their alt-folk band Fresh Breath after more than two years of pandemic shutdowns left them without earnings. With more than 30 gigs booked on their We’re Driving Everywhere tour, they plan to wind through Ontario to Alberta and back. Now a few weeks into their tour, fuel prices hover around $2 a litre and the husband-wife duo are passing around a tip jar at shows to keep from running on empty. – READ MORE

Top Female Songwriter Autumn Rowe, Execs Speak of ‘Unsafe Situations’ and Other Challenges Facing Women in Music Business There’s no question: As challenging as the music industry can be for men, it’s twice as tough for women. That was one of the many takeaways from a panel discussion during the National Music Publishers Association’s annual meeting. When catalyst moments occur in one’s life the universe presents a choice – continue the path you’re on or surrender to an identity shift. In late 2020 I closed the door on my shadow life and started a sonic pursuit that gives me a sense of purpose – and thus has grown into an endless love affair. When you listen to my music I ask that you can find your own story within it. I’m hoping it can bring you to life, give you the push to follow your fascinations, and inspire you to cultivate joy. I look forward to sharing with you my songs, my story, my universe, and more importantly, connecting and enjoying our time together.
