SPOTLIGHT OF THE WEEK

Singer-songwriter Laura Kelsey is writing modern mythology with her just-released debut EP Hunting Season. Laura is an art-folk musician living in Nanaimo/Snuneymuxw First Nation Territory, B.C., who has fronted everything from metal to blues bands; and she brings these musical influences together to create unique songs inspired by natural West Coast elements, honesty and dreams.

With a powerhouse voice like Evanescence’s Amy Lee and a timeless vibe like Stevie Nicks and Florence + the Machine, Laura’s songs feature captivating soundscapes and mystical lyrics. Whether she’s casting a banishing spell after receiving an ex’s friend request on “”Your Stormy Ways”” or singing about a fantastical creation story on Hunting Season’s title track, Laura effortlessly infuses earthy magic into her musical storytelling. The new EP was produced by Winston Hauschild and recorded on Bowen Island’s The Treehouse Studio.

Laura performs throughout B.C. as an acoustic solo artist or with her band the Cosmopolitik, consisting of Cal Webb on lead guitar, Steve Barraclough on drums and Nyck Machura on bass. Last year Laura performed at festivals like Islands Folk Festival (Duncan) and Sonic Summer Nights (Vancouver); and was the opening act for Matthew Good on his fall 2022 solo tour of Vancouver Island.
