French cultural attaché and Vancouver Centre for Digital Media produce Serious Game for arts professionals
The Future Arts Centre — Serious Game aims to hone key skills for success in the challenging field of operating arts and cultural events and spaces. Vancouver-based French cultural attaché Alexandre Col led the development of the game that is licensed under Creative Commons for universal use. The concept dates back a decade or so to a discussion Col and a colleague had about the need for different ways to work on arts and cultural projects — from new festivals to venues — that would permit multiple outcome simulations taking into account decisions made in areas of five spheres of action. – READ MORE
Why ‘Gen A’ is consuming music so differently
Gen Alpha represents a distinct switch in the norm, powering a more
‘lean-in’ music consumption from earlier ages. Gen Alpha, or Gen A as they’re more commonly known, are generation born since the year 2010. Relatively nascent right now, they are predicted to reach 2.2 billion in volume globally by 2025, which will make them the largest generation in history. It is Gen A, alongside some of their younger Gen Z counterparts, that are currently shaking up the music scene in the way they discover, consume and share.Have you found yourself humming along to
Running Up That Hill recently? First released by Kate Bush in 1985, it’s back topping the charts this Summer. While re-releases and re-mixes of old tracks is not new news, the interesting point in the case of Kate is that it’s testament to a new young army of curious and influential music consumers.

Irish Government Pays Artists & Musicians $330 ‘Basic Income’ Allowance
The Irish government is now paying 2,000 artists, musicians, writers, and performers a ‘basic income’ of €325 ($329) each week. The plan for the Basic Income for Artists was originally announced back in January 2022. The Minister for Culture and Arts is spending around €25m ($23.3M) on the initiative. Over 9,000 people applied to join the program, with 2,000 accepted. Those who were accepted into the program were selected anonymously and at random. According to the BBC, musicians, and artists make up the bulk of recipients, who will receive the stipend for three years. The basic income initiative was set up for those working in the arts by a task force appointed by the Irish Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sports and Media, Catherine Martin. – READ MORE

Use of Production Music on Broadcast and Cable TV Reaches New Heights: Study
Nearly half of all the music played on American broadcast and cable TV is production music, according to a new study by music data company BMAT. The survey, commissioned by the Production Music Association, looked at 47 high-rated channels including broadcast networks. Non-advertiser-supported pay cable and streaming services were not included. The survey, done in February and March of this year, indicated that music was used in 39% of the total airtime, and that 46% of that music originated in production music companies or music libraries. – READ MORE

YouTube Says It Paid The Music Industry Over $6BN In The Past Year – With Around $2BN Coming From UGC
YouTube says it still has its sights on overtaking Spotify as the music rights industry’s biggest partner by 2025 – although right now the two firms appear to be just about keeping pace with one another. YouTube’s Global Head of Music, Lyor Cohen, has announced that YouTube paid music rightsholders over USD $6 billion in the 12 months to end of June 2022. That figure is significant for a number of reasons, not least that it’s a $2 billion increase from the $4 billion contribution to music rightsholders that YouTube said it paid out in the prior-year period (the 12 months to end of June 2021). – READ MORE
Black Lives in Music boss talks anti-racism, diversity and a fairer music industry for everyone
UK organization Black Lives in Music is preparing to launch an anti-racism code of conduct for the music industry, and also a report examining the challenges faced by Black people with disabilities in the industry. Chief executive Charisse Beaumont talked about the plans during her appearance at the FastForward conference in London this week, where she was interviewed by AudienceNet’s head of research Sania Haq for a session on the importance of visibility and representation. “We’re announcing an industry-wide anti-racism code of conduct. What do you need that for? If you saw my emails, you would see the necessity for it – we need it!” said Beaumont, who had earlier explained that she receives at least a dozen emails or calls a week from Black professionals or creators relating new cases of discrimination. – READ MORE
Terri Lyne Carrington Curates Groundbreaking Lead Sheet Book of Female-Composed Jazz Standards: ‘We Can Transform a Culture’
Though women have always played a leading role as jazz performers, they have seldom gotten the credit they deserve as writers. Jazz drummer, composer/producer and three-time Grammy winner Terri Lyne Carrington attempts to right that wrong with New Standards: 101 Lead Sheets By Women Composers, published by Hal Leonard and curated by Carrington, out Sept. 15. The project spans a century of jazz compositions, including works by seminal artists such as Lil Hardin Armstrong, Dianne Reeves, Maria Schneider, Cassandra Wilson and Alice Coltrane. The book crosses generations and continents, with additional contributions from bassist/singer Esperanza Spalding, Chilean tenor saxophonist Melissa Aldana and Japanese American pianist Toshiko Akiyoshi. – READ MORE
